The Western Youth Leadership, Engagement, and Empowerment Middle School, or WYLEES, is an APPROVED Nevada public charter middle school opening in the fall of 2025. WYLEES intends to serve the downtown Las Vegas area by providing Project Based Learning (PBL) experiences that are co-created with students and families and focused on improving the community through real world service learning. WYLEES will empower tomorrow’s leaders to change the world today through creativity, collaboration, and civic engagement. We are excited to announce that we will open our founding location at the Boulevard Mall on Maryland Parkway near UNLV! The Mission of the Western Youth Leadership, Engagement, and Empowerment Middle School (WYLEES) is to: ~Energize diverse youth leaders who are socially, emotionally, and academically prepared to shape the future. ~Engage students in academics through community service and real-world, hands-on learning. ~Empower students to solve problems through innovation, advocacy, and action to create a better world for all.

In honor of Native American Heritage Day, WYLEES celebrates the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of the Paiute and Ute tribes, whose land we are fortunate to learn and grow on. Today, we recognize and respect the enduring legacy of these communities and their vital place in our region’s history. Here are some ways their legacy lives on today: ?? Paiute basket weaving is a significant cultural art form. They are known for intricately woven baskets used for gathering, cooking, and ceremonial purposes. ?? The Utes were one of the first tribes in the region to adopt horses. Horses allowed for greater mobility which then greatly expanded their ability to trade. #NativeAmericanHeritageDay

Please join us in welcoming our new Director of Operations, Suzanna Nelson! ?? Suzanna is a first generation college graduate who started her own business to put herself through college. Suzanna was a celebrated English teacher in WYLEES' neighborhood for many years and holds both an MS in Learning Experience Design and Educational Technology and an M.Ed in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. Suzanna's experiences navigating a path to college in trying circumstances and working with students from WYLEES' geographic area-as well as her passion for continually improving student experiences when it comes to designing curriculum-make her an empathetic leader who can help empower WYLEES' future leaders. We can't wait to see the impact she has on our organization and community through her work at WYLEES!
