Last night’s event marked the exciting launch of Commissioner-elect Richard D. Lara campaign, and it was truly a remarkable occasion! We had the privilege of gaining deeper insight into his core values, his strong family foundation, and his visionary plans for the future of Coral Gables. It was an inspiring and enlightening experience. I also had the honor of spending time with my dear friend, Liliam Lopez, Dr. (h.c.), President of the Hispanic Chamber, whose leadership in our community continues to make a profound impact. It’s always a privilege to connect with such a passionate advocate for positive change. I am incredibly proud to support Richard D. Lara as the next Commissioner of Coral Gables. I look forward to the change he will bring to The City Beautiful!

The holidays continue with Three Kings Day on January 6! This holiday celebrates the arrival of the three kings—Balthazar, Melchior, and Gaspar—in Bethlehem. It is a tradition observed in some Latino communities across the United States, in places like Puerto Rico and Spain, and numerous countries across Latin America. For instance, in Puerto Rico and Mexico, and Puerto Rican and Mexican communities across the U.S., children place boxes of hay and bowls of water out for the kings’ horses, or camels, the night before, and, in exchange, they receive gifts from the Three Kings when they wake up. Other traditions in Mexican American communities include drinking hot chocolate and eating La Rosca de Reyes (The Three Kings wreath). Did you know that figurines of baby Jesus are hidden in the wreaths, and that those who get the slice with the figurine offer a tamalada (tamal-making party) on February 2nd? Although the tradition began in medieval Europe, where the kings are shown riding camels, Puerto Rican images like this one generally show them riding horses. This sculpture of the Three Kings is in the Teodoro Vidal Collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. Learn more about the tradition and explore the holiday with our Three Kings Day Learning Kit: https://s.si.edu/40lz16r! Sharing for reach and awareness. Jesús’ disappearance at the hands of Maduro’s ruthless dictatorship is unfortunately not an isolated incident. It is the harsh reality promising, smart, committed Venezuelan youth face every day. An 2023 Amnesty International report, indicates that according to the nonprofit Foro Penal between 2014 and 2023 there have been at least 15,700 unlawful detentions, many of which are forced dissapareances, such as Jesus’. I stand in solidarity with the families of those unlawfully detained, forcefully disappeared, violated in their freedom or tortured in any way by the Maduro regime, including Jesus and his family. According to the United Nations, “the crime of enforced disappearance entails the violation of multiple human rights, they said (…) [including] the right to recognition as a person before the law, the right to liberty and security, and the right to be free from torture.” FREE Jesús Armas Monasterios! #PoliticalPrisioners #FreedomNow #FreeVenezuela
Jesús Armas Monasterios, a former Venezuelan student at Columbia University, was unlawfully detained by the Maduro regime. As an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs, I have the privilege of interacting with remarkable young leaders and professionals from diverse backgrounds from all corners of the world. I am impressed every day by their courage, commitment to the greater good, and desire to learn so that they can find solutions to better the lives of their fellow countrymen and women. One such inspiring leader is Jesus Armas, a Venezuelan civil society leader and Obama Scholar at Columbia University, who attended my lectures and came to my office hours to learn all he could about finance, decarbonization, and the energy transition. At Columbia, Jesus was relentless in his goal to learn about how he could help his country, Venezuela, achieve a more reliable and cleaner energy so that Venezuelans could have access to this basic public service, which is notoriously unreliable in the country. How can somebody pursuing such worthy goals be jailed? Jesus was unlawfully detained by the authoritarian Maduro regime this week. His family and friends do not know his whereabouts. Many young and talented Venezuelans have fled their country in search of a better life in other countries that value all the amazing things they have to offer. But Jesus was in Venezuela, giving his best. I stand in solidarity with Jesus Armas, who followed the road less traveled and returned to his home country to pursue his dream of a better future for Venezuela.
