教育业

We are a non-profit educational arm of Common Power. We teach the history of race and voting to mobilize voters.

关于我们

The Institute for Common Power is the 501(c)3 educational arm of Common Power. We catalyze people to action through workshops, lectures, courses, learning tours, national educational events and more designed to foster, sustain, and expand what should be the most common power in American democracy-the right to vote. Ensuring a vote for all is essential to dismantling systems of injustice and creating equitable healthcare, living wages, decent housing, affordable education, and so much more. Voting has always been contested in America, and today this foundational democratic power is under assault–especially for communities of color. The Institute for Common Power is devoted to education to action as a foundation to voting justice and inclusive democracy in the United States.

Strategic and collaborative leader helping organizations inspire action, investment, and change

I spent six days in Atlanta, Montgomery, Birmingham, and Selma this past week, digging into the modern Civil Rights Movement on a Truth and Purpose Learning Tour through The Institute for Common Power. Our group began our time together as a collection of strangers and colleagues, and ended deeply connected and deeply motivated. Thanks to the incredible--really truly incredible--teaching of Institute leaders, we dove deep into historical and contemporary realities of race and voting justice. We spent time talking with Civil Rights-era leaders, and learned from people who are leading the fight for justice in their communities today. In so many ways, this trip was a profound learning experience for all of us who participated. And I can't stop thinking about the empty Freedom Riders National Monument visitor center in Anniston, Alabama, or the National Parks Service's Selma Interpretive Center at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which is "closed for major construction" and impossible to imagine reopening anytime soon. As we stood in front of a building-sized mural of John Lewis on Auburn Ave in Atlanta, a site with tremendous historic significance, we found out that the National Endowment for the Humanities is being gutted. History--recent history--is being erased and buried in front of our eyes. The Institute is fighting to tell the stories of American history, where it happened, and with context and connection. They bring people together to face where we have come from and what we have overcome to give shape to where we need to go. Their goal, always, is to move from education to action. As education and truth is under direct and explicit attack, we need organizations like the Institute to continue sharing this history. To learn more about The Institute for Common Power and their incredible array of learning opportunities, check out their website: https://lnkd.in/gpyXVMhi And if you want to get engaged with their work, which is truly extraordinary, I'd love to talk. Their work is essential.

  • Powerful words from our Educator Ambassador Ivory Kennedy Jr., M.Ed., reflecting on crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge on the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday with us. “If they crossed, so can we.” ✊🏾 Read his piece in Three-Fifths Magazine.

My latest piece in Three-Fifths Magazine is a personal & historical reflection on the privilege I had, crossing the Edmund Pettis Bridge on the 60th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. Alongside members of The Institute for Common Power, I was significantly moved and feel that we MUST channel that energy to demonstrate the true power of the people to enact change and move forward as a nation. If they crossed, so can we.

  • We are incredibly grateful for Educator Ambassadors like Ivory Kennedy Jr., M.Ed. who remain in our fold, deepening their impact and continuing the work. Thank you, Ivory, for your dedication!

Over the weekend I had the honor and privilege of participating and presenting with The Institute for Common Power at this year’s National Council for History Education conference in St. Louis, MO. Getting the chance to meet history educators & administrators from across the country, dedicated to ensuring students have the social studies education they deserve was reinvigorating and proves there are people who care about teaching the truth! We must never settle for anything less than that; Ever.

  • Educator Ambassador Brenda Nelson used the Institute's Education to Action Project Fund to host a Cultural Family Night at her school and and these photos are truly a joy to see! Seeing educators bring their communities together in meaningful ways reinforces the impact we’re making, even beyond what we can measure. Moments like these remind us why this work matters. Seeing educators create meaningful spaces for their communities reinforces the impact we’re making, even beyond what we can measure. Grateful for Brenda and all the educators turning education into action! #EducationToAction #CommunityImpact #HopeInAction
