While both women and men hold knowledge vital to Inuit culture and tradition, leadership roles in Nunavut are often still held by men. Women leaders help ensure diverse perspectives in decision-making, enriching and strengthening environmental and cultural initiatives with a broader range of insights and experiences while serving as role models for future generations. With that in mind, it was especially impactful for a knowledge-sharing trip last spring to be led by three Inuit women. WWF-Canada staff joined members of Taloyoak Umaruliririgut Association (TUA) — the local hunters and trappers organization (HTO) for the community of Taloyoak representing TUA and the Aqviqtuuq IPCA project — on this knowledge-sharing trip. After the trip, WWF-Canada sat down with the three women leaders to learn more about their experience. It's World Wildlife Day ?? ?? ?? The biggest threat to Arctic species is rapid, irreversible change to their habitats as a direct result of climate change. Many Arctic species are highly adapted to the cold and rely on ice or permafrost for their survival. This means that these species are especially vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and escalating industrial activities. Many Arctic animals are also important to Indigenous peoples' culture and the health of Arctic ecosystems. Climate action will help conserve Arctic animals' habitats — world leaders, we're looking at you to act. Like and share if you agree ?? WWF-Norway appeals ruling from Oslo District Court in deep seabed mining case ???? On 13 February 2025, the Oslo District Court acquitted the state in a case which WWF-Norway took the government to court for violating the Seabed Minerals Act. “We do not agree with the assessments made by the Oslo District Court and believe that the ruling contains several serious faults. We have therefore decided to appeal,” says Karoline Andaur, CEO of WWF Verdens naturfond. The area open for deep sea mining is the size of the United Kingdom and extends into Arctic waters. It's World Whale Day ?? There are three whale species that spend their entire lives in the Arctic — beluga, bowhead and narwhal. These whales use Arctic blue corridors — migration superhighways — to move between important Arctic habitats for different life events, such as feeding, birth and mating. In September 2024, WWF Global Arctic Programme launched a first-of-its-kind report that looked at these Arctic whales’ migratory behaviour across the entire Arctic Ocean, including: ?? Where blue corridors are in the Arctic Ocean. ?? When the corridors are being used by whales. ?? And how whales’ journeys overlaps with ship traffic. The threats these whales face while migrating are growing as sea ice melts and shipping activity increases. By protecting blue corridors we can ensure that these whales reach the habitats they need for important life events. In the last decade:? ?? Arctic ship traffic increased 37 per cent? ?? The distance ships traveled in the Arctic doubled Less sea ice has opened up the Arctic Ocean to more shipping and industrial activity. That’s why we need to ensure a safe passage for migrating whales as they travel along Arctic blue corridors ?? WWF Global Arctic Programme was the first to map Arctic whales’ migratory behaviour across the entire Arctic Ocean in an interactive report launched September 2024. We highlight what we know about the Arctic blue corridors — and what can be done.
