?? Check out our second annual Department of Medicine medical student round table! Our pre-clerkship students had the opportunity to engage with nine faculty members, exploring the unique opportunities each subspecialty offers. This event fosters mentorship, enhances interest, and opens doors for research collaboration, reminding us all of our passion for teaching and medicine. We also enjoyed a delicious dinner from Blackbear, with a special guest appearance from one of our youngest WVU Internal Medicine members—Dr. Labus’s daughter! ?? Grateful for the wonderful connections and shared experiences created in our department!

Meeting Medicine | Physician Feature ?? Meet Matt Lokant, MD! Throughout this series, we connect with some of the leading physicians in our Department, like Dr. Lokant. Check out his insightful feedback below! ?? Can you tell us about your professional development journey? I am a native of southern West Virginia who grew up in Oak Hill, WV. I completed undergraduate, medical school, and Internal Medicine residency at WVU. I was part of the Global Health Track during medical school and IM residency. After residency, I went to Nashville, TN where I was a Chief Infectious Diseases Fellow at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. I also completed the LEAP Fellowship (Leaders in Epidemiology, Antimicrobial Stewardship and Public Health), sponsored by IDSA, SHEA, PIDS and CDC. I am now the Hospital Epidemiologist for Ruby Memorial Hospital. ?? Do you have a favorite memory that sticks with you throughout your career? One of my favorite experiences from the LEAP Fellowship was through the Global Action in Healthcare Network (GAIHN). I contributed to implementing sustainable programs through a partnership between three Greek hospitals and Vanderbilt University. Our partnership led to improvement in antibiotic resistance laboratory detection, communication, and infection control responses. ?? How do you prioritize self-care and maintain a work-life balance in such a demanding profession? To achieve work-life balance, you must make it a priority every day. Finding the elements that improve your wellness is essential to achieving personal and professional success. My passions outside of medicine include music, exercise, and food. Read Dr. Lokant's full interview in this month's Newsletter!
