?? Nurses in Baltimore are rallying to raise awareness about poor staffing and patient safety concerns ?? Registered nurses at St. Agnes hospital, Baltimore, are speaking out against poor staffing practices that put patients at risk. Short staffing has caused nurses to miss breaks during 12-hour shifts, and a lack of sufficient staff for emergency room shifts has led to longer wait times in the ER. The staffing issues have even impacted their care of children: “Despite needing at least two pediatric nurses to staff our department, hospital management will only schedule one and float nurses from other units for most shifts," said Nicki Horvat, RN in the Maternal Child Health department. "Sometimes, management pulls a nurse from the post-partum unit ... This is not fair to our patients.” When hospital systems cut costs to increase profits, they increase the burden on hardworking medical practitioners, which increases the chances that a serious case of medical malpractice occurs. This is especially concerning when short staffing is affecting neonatal units, leaving newborn children and new mothers exposed to negligence. As ever, a reckless pursuit of profit stands in the way of appropriate and effective patient care. https://hubs.li/Q03bWXBJ0

Each year, the Annual Shkreli Awards highlight the egregious profiteering in the U.S. healthcare system, which often leaves families struggling for justice. The results are in this year, and the top 3 'winners' for their profiteering practices are: 3. Amgen's drug Lumakras, which was approved quickly at a higher dose, even though it was found that a lower dose worked just as well, with fewer harmful side effects and a lower toxicity risk. 2. UnitedHealthcare, which recently became the fourth largest business in the U.S.A. Doctors have claimed that United pressured them to reduce time spent with patients, and make patients seem as sick as possible. 1. Steward Healthcare, whose CEO was accused of prioritizing private-equity profits over patient outcomes. According to the Guardian, "his financial scheming led to bankruptcy, leaving hospitals in shambles, employees laid off and communities with less healthcare access." You can learn more about the other 'winners' in the Guardian article linked below. https://hubs.ly/Q031H1dC0

It has been a year of growth for us - and growing means we can do more to serve injured children and their families nationwide. We've celebrated historic wins this year, and have spread our reach to serve more families than ever. As we grow, we remember what is important at the firm. Healthcare providers' pursuit of profit can often impact patient outcomes - leading to mistakes, malpractice, and a reduced standard of care. But could an overreliance on nurse practitioners be harming patients? Nurse practitioners are typically quicker to train, cheaper to hire - and recently have been required to shoulder additional responsibilities, which may compromise their ability to provide an acceptable standard of patient care. Bloomberg explores the situation unfolding in hospitals across the U.S. and how it is impacting patients - and practitioners: https://hubs.li/Q02-8r0F0
