  • Under the leadership of Governor Patrick Morrisey, the West Virginia National Guard continues to provide response and recovery assistance due to the widespread flooding that has impacted southern West Virginia. More than 165 Guard personnel are currently conducting emergency food, water and cleaning supplies distribution missions beside local organizations and volunteers and providing support operations to officials and citizens in Wyoming, Logan, Mercer, Mingo, McDowell, and Wayne counties. So far, Guard personnel have assisted in the removal of more than 760 tons of flood debris from public spaces, streets, and streams.? #Resiliency #Readiness #Community #Response #Recovery #AlwaysReadyAlwaysThere

  • On January 20, 2025, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday will mark the 31st anniversary as a National Day of Service.? The first official MLK Day was held in 1986. In 1994, Congress designated the third Monday in January every year as the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.? Dr. King advocated for nonviolent resistance to overcome injustice as a means of lifting racial oppression. His legacy stands as a continuing beacon of hope, equality, justice, and reverence for our fellow man. His life, his vision, his leadership, and his dreams all still speak to us today, and will do so for generations to come.? The continuing U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) theme for the MLK Day of Service is, “Remember! Celebrate! Act! A Day On…Not A Day Off.” The theme is a call to action through personal service. Together, we keep Dr. King’s legacy alive, working together to strengthen the values of the communities we serve. It is my sincere hope that our entire #OneGuard family will take today to reflect on the life and legacy of Dr. King, and that we will always aspire to commit to and devote ourselves to work that embodies the spirit of service. Not just on this day, but on every day of every year.? - MG William "Bill" Crane, Adjutant General WVNG #MLKDay #IHaveADream #CivilRights #DayOfService #OneGuard #Guard387

  • Sergeant Christopher Michael Axman, a 68W Health Care Specialist with the West Virginia Army National Guard Medical Detachment (MEDDET), is this week’s Soldier Spotlight. Originally from Parkersburg and now living in Morgantown, Axman is dedicated to the medical community both in his military career and civilian life. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology and is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Nursing, both from West Virginia University. He also works as an Emergency Department Technician at Ruby Memorial Hospital. “My professional goals are to become an orthopedic Nurse Practitioner in my civilian life, and to commission as a Nurse Practitioner in the Guard.” What Axman likes best about his chosen Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) as a 68W is the ability for cross training with other specialties.? “As a medic, you can join any unit in the state. You get to train alongside every MOS and learn skills from all walks of life in the Guard. Having friends in both the Army and Air National Guard, we all serve together as one cohesive unit... a #OneGuard family... and cross train to learn from each other.” Axman is third generation military, with his grandfather serving in the U.S. Navy, and his father serving in the United States Marine Corps. That family legacy drove his choices to serve his country and community. “I serve in the United States Military because I have always had a strong desire to serve and a deep love for my country. The military service is loaded with opportunities that you just don’t get as a civilian. I wouldn’t be who I am today without raising my right hand and reciting the oath of enlistment. The Guard has given me so many opportunities that I would never have had before joining. Looking back, joining the West Virginia Army National Guard has been the best decision of my life.”

  • Our pets are part of our families too. Make sure they are prepared for Winter weather! ?? Do not leave your pets outdoors unattended when the temperature gets below freezing (32° F). Frostbite is a threat to animals exposed to harsh, cold weather. ?? Never leave a pet alone in a car during cold weather. Cars hold in the cold like a refrigerator and your pet can freeze to death. ?? Keep pets away from antifreeze and promptly clean up any spills from your car. Antifreeze is a lethal poison for pets, even in tiny doses. Unfortunately, animals are attracted to its sweet taste. ?? Keep your cat inside. Cats can crawl into a warm car engine for shelter and can be seriously injured or killed when the car is started. Check under the hood before starting your car in the winter to chase away any hidden cats or other wildlife. ?? Wipe off your pet’s paws, legs, and stomach after being out in the snow or ice. Any salt or other de-icing chemicals that are swallowed by licking can make your pet sick. ?? If your dog is sensitive to the cold due to age, illness, or breed type (small, or short haired), take him outdoors only long enough to relieve himself. Puppies do not tolerate cold as well as adult dogs. ?? Never let your dog off-leash in snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm. Dogs often lose their scent in snow and ice and can easily become lost.
