After a long flight from Los Angeles, I made it back to CT just in time to be a judge at the VEX Robotics CT State Championship at Plainville Middle School. This past weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to interview teams about their robots—what they did well, where they found inspiration, what they would improve, and their future aspirations. One of my biggest takeaways? Many of these teams weren’t just teammates; they were close friends who had the chance to meet other students with the same passion for technology and engineering. It was inspiring to see how collaboration and teamwork played such a huge role in their success. One standout moment was meeting an all-female team—who also happened to be on the basketball team together. They shared how their strong bond helped them specialize in their respective strengths, from programming and chassis design to scoring strategy. Their drive and passion were so evident that we joked one of them would be our boss one day! Beyond judging, I loved passing along pieces of advice to the students, like: ?? Stick with technology education if it's something they truly enjoy. ?? Explore hobbies that align with STEM, like working on cars, building computers, or 3D printing (shameless plug). Interacting with these students gave me faith that the future of technology is anything but dull. Most of them lit up when talking about why they love robotics and their excitement for next year’s competitions. I originally volunteered as a judge because I enjoy sharing insights I wish I had at their age. After this experience, there’s no doubt—I’d happily do it again. If you've ever considered mentoring or judging a STEM competition, I highly recommend it. Seeing the next generation of builders, designers, and engineers in action is truly inspiring! #STEM #Robotics #VEXIQ #FutureEngineers
