When Yale University decided to relocate its neuroscience and psychology disciplines into new facilities at 100 College Street, the University enlisted Ellenzweig to help unify various departments that had been scattered across its campus into a single, cohesive environment conducive to interdisciplinary collaboration. Our mission was to enhance both physical and intellectual connections. The result was the renovation of over 140,000 square feet of existing office space into cutting-edge research labs, offices, and collaboration spaces. In partnership with Vanderweil Engineers, we designed interconnected labs that are efficient, flexible, and adhere to the highest sustainability standards. The building now accommodates departments from the School of Medicine along with the Wu Tsai Institute, a University initiative established in 2021 to further research into human cognition. With the recent dedication of 100 College Street, Yale has further strengthened its position as a leader in the bioscience sector. Wu Tsai Faculty Members Steve Chang, Phil Corlett, and Jane Taylor used data from monkeys and humans performing the same task, and applied the same computational analysis to both datasets. Published in Cell Reports, the findings offer insights into how paranoia arises in the human brain and establish a cross-species framework to explore human cognition further. #KnowTogether

Professors Cristina Rodriguez in biomedical engineering and Lea Winter in chemical and environmental engineering have each been awarded the Beckman Foundation Young Investigator award. The four-year grants are in the range of $600,000 and provide research support to the most promising young faculty members in the early stages of their academic careers in the chemical and life sciences. Rodriguez and Winter are two of the 10 researchers chosen nationally for the award this year. Roriguez’s project aims to develop new microscopic imaging – with technology borrowed from the field of astronomy - to better study information processing in the central nervous system. The key is in the technology’s unprecedented subcellular image quality from deep tissue layers, where essential neuronal processes take place. This clarity will make it possible to better understand the patterns of communication between neurons in real time. Winter is developing a new method of producing ammonia for fertilizer that addresses two long-standing challenges: Reducing carbon emissions, and increasing global access to fertilizer. She plans to use new plasma-electrochemical processes to provide an efficient form of low-temperature, electrified ammonia synthesis from air and water with the potential to mitigate the enormous climate impacts of conventional fertilizer synthesis.
