Royal Dutch Shell reports a 95% success rate over 19 fields tests. Regional regulatory agencies in Canada, the U.S. and Europe have approved the use of Expansion Charges for plug and abandonment and other well intervention operations. The company was founded In 2002 by William T. Bell and James (Jim) Rairigh, who have a combined 100+ years of experience in oilfield explosives applications and pipe recovery. Jim Rairigh continues to operate the company since Mr. Bell’s passing in 2017.

In Romania, several squeeze job operations failed to shut off flow up the 5.5-in. x 8.625-in. well annulus.?WT Bell recommended running three 4.2-in. Expansion Charges in the 15.5-lbm J55 casing. The Expansion Charges achieved maximum pipe expansion without rupture to remediate the annulus leaks. No restrictions, obstructions, or leak paths were introduced, allowing full wellbore access post-intervention.?

In a P&A operation on a North Sea well, 5-in. tubing had to be expanded at the target depth to bring it near the ID of the 7-in. liners. A W. T. Bell Expansion Charge was run to the target depth and activated to expand the 5-in. tubing OD to 6.034 in., close to the 7-in. liner ID. The successful operation resulted from extensive testing at the W. T. Bell facility in Texas. The charge was optimized based on tubing size, weight and grade, the wellbore fluid, hydrostatic pressure, and the 26-degree well deviation at target depth. Six tests were completed in a pressurized test chamber to confirm the control and the capability of expanding the tubing to the prerequisite OD. The thorough testing confirmed the tubing could be expanded to the required OD without rupture and caliper logs run after expansion confirmed tubing integrity was maintained. #perforating #wellintervention
