Willow is proudly car-free, embracing alternative transportation options as a rebellion against car dependence. While navigating infrastructure gaps and missing bus connections can be frustrating, she appreciates the benefits. Her habits keep her active by walking to bus stops or biking to the store while reducing emissions and making her trips eco-friendly. On her bike or scooter, she enjoys the beauty of off-road paths in Washington County. Riding TriMet to school allows her to use her commute productively, completing homework and enjoying more free time. Willow finds joy in her transportation habits, knowing she contributes to a healthier planet and her own well-being.

Wyatt is car-free, relying on MAX and bus routes every day for his commute to work, grocery shopping, and exploring the city. He believes transit is essential for healthy communities. Despite growing up in a small desert town without many transportation options, he has never been interested in driving; advocating for a car-free/lite lifestyle among his friends, coworkers, and family. He enjoys the freedom public transit provides but wishes it were more reliable, accessible, and available at night to fit his work schedule. Nevertheless, he appreciates the money he saves and his commutes filled with conversations, music, and a deeper connection with his community. Tim embraces a car-lite lifestyle because biking brings him joy. It’s not just fun; it helps the environment and saves money. With his full-size cargo bike, he handles groceries, assists with moves, and hauls home treasures—all without a car. He attributes his connection to vibrant communities, both locally and socially, to his transportation habits. While navigating trips can be challenging, with safe, off-street paths interrupted by gaps in infrastructure, Tim stays hopeful. By being visible on the road, he hopes to improve active transportation infrastructure, normalizing biking as a viable transportation option and inspiring others to join him. For day four of #WeekWithoutDriving, we're feating Greg Witt. Greg is car-free, biking and using public transit to reduce his emissions and combat the climate crisis. He commutes into Portland on MAX for his classes at PSU, and rides his bike twelve miles from home to his grocer of choice for a twice-monthly haul. Greg loves the physical activity and the opportunity to observe Washington County’s wildlife during his rides. However, navigating this lifestyle isn’t without its challenges. Having come from a place with limited bike infrastructure, he understands the importance of supporting what exists. He perseveres because each ride keeps him fit and connected to his community, all while protecting the environment. Today, we're featuring Tina Ricks (@Tina_In_The_Burbs). Tina is car-lite, motivated by her ability to make an individual impact on the climate crisis. She attributes her ability to make trips by bike to her employer’s flexibility with working from home, only bike commuting to her office in Northwest Portland once or twice a week. Joining her neighbor on their bike commute on her work from home days. While she sometimes arrives to work sweaty or cold, she’s able to store and dry her coat, and shower. She finds happiness in riding a bike, she’s able to decompress on her ride home after work and that makes it worth it. Day two of #WeekWithoutDriving, how is it going? Need some help? Nic went car-lite in an effort to save money. With housing costs high, he put his sights on reducing his transportation costs. Nic started commuting by bike, and slowly swapped car trips for bike and transit. Though inconvenient transit schedules and car-oriented infrastructure have presented challenges, now most all of his tasks, including Costco runs, are done by bike or transit. He attributes his new-found transportation habits to better mental and physical wellbeing, and feels more connected with his community outside of a car. Nic uses the money he saves on transportation to indulge in things he enjoys, like traveling, and was even able to save up and purchase a home.
