Dr. Sarah Calvin ('21, DVM) is one of seven veterinarians on staff at Riverview Animal Clinic in Clarkston, Washington, and one of six who earned their #DVM at the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine, but this week she returned to her alma mater to coach #VeterinaryStudents in seats that were reserved for her just a few years ago. It's Dr. Calvin's second return to the Diagnostic Challenge. Read how she leaned on the skills she acquired from her DC experience on her very first shift as a practicing veterinarian: https://lnkd.in/gf3hJFKg

One of the greatest things about the #WSUVetMed Diagnostic Challenge – the growth we see in our second-year #VeterinaryStudents. Here’s a look back at some of our best photos from Day 1 of the case-based simulation exercise. #SimulationEducation #VeterinaryMedicine #WSU #GoCougs

Wolfie, a shepherd-lab mix diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening condition known as #chylothorax, now has a new lease on life thanks to a series of delicate and complex procedures and technology available at #WSUVetMed and only a handful of other veterinary institutions. Chylothorax causes an abnormal tangle of lymph vessels and leakage of lymphatic fluid into the chest cavity. The leakage was making it extremely difficult for Wolfie to breathe and posed a risk of irreversible damage to the heart and lungs. Shout out to, Tiko, one of our longstanding — and now retired — blood donors in #WSUVetMed’s Blood Bank and Transfusion Medicine Program. It’s safe to say without donors like Tiko that make the blood bank possible, WSU would not be the emergency veterinary referral facility that it is today. Over the course of 7 years, Tiko donated blood 27 times! Each donation has the potential to help 4-5 different dogs. Tiko is owned by Dr. Rachel Halsey, so shout out to Tiko’s mom for bringing him to help other dogs when they need it the most. Serena Simmons not only got her dog, Sharon, all caught up on her vaccines but also is now one step closer to having a home to call her own — thanks in part to Thursday's Washington State University’s Healthy People + Healthy Pets free clinic. “All of this is going to help when I go to apply for an apartment or a house, so when I go in and show them, ‘hey, look my dogs are vaccinated and neutered,’ they are more likely to choose us as tenants,” said Simmons, a guest at The Way Out Bridge Housing Center in #Spokane. For at least seven years, the Healthy People + Healthy Pets clinic at Washington State University Spokane has offered free health care services to low-income people or people experiencing homelessness and their pets. #WSUVetMed and #WSUNursing students work together in the clinic under the direction of faculty members to provide routine vaccinations, immunizations, health screenings, and simple treatments to people and pets, all at no cost. #Community #GivingBack #OneHealth #WSU #GoCougs More about Healthy People + Healthy Pets: https://lnkd.in/gtquimCi

A new program led by Washington State University will receive up to $35 million over the next five years from the USAID - US Agency for International Development to improve the development, delivery, adoption and use of effective veterinary vaccines to help combat global hunger and poverty. Funded under USAID’s Feed the Future initiative, the Feed the Future Veterinary Vaccine Delivery Innovation Lab (VVDIL) will focus on boosting food security and improving nutrition for women and children in Kenya, Tanzania and Nepal by tackling the primary barriers to the widespread use of veterinary vaccines in those areas, including the significant challenge posed by cold chain dependency.
