The 2024 NASPA Western Regional Conference has come to an end and it was such an amazing time! This was the 2nd year I was part of the conference committee and I had the privilege of co facilitating the New Professionals Institute with Erin Sine ! I attended so many amazing sessions to bring knowledge back to my institution and better inform my work. I also received my first professional award in NASPA as the recipient of the Region V Community College Professional award! The work I did at Skagit Valley College was some major heart work for me and community colleges will always hold a special place in my heart since I attended a community college. Shout out to my amazing NASPA colleagues for an amazing weekend!

Director at Washington State University Everett

Over the weekend, I had the pleasure of hosting another Girls Explore STEM event at Washington State University Everett! We had over 100 participants in addition to multiple parents, siblings, and friends. Truly an incredible turnout, and a massive thank you to the WSU Everett staff, faculty, and volunteer team who made this day incredible. Special thank you to Ryan's REZ-ipes Food Truck & Catering for catering the event and providing everyone with delicious food! When I do the opening speech, I always include the following because it is critically important: "By hosting Girls Explore STEM, we aim to spark curiosity and break down barriers. Our goal is to inspire each young person here—especially those underrepresented in STEM fields—to envision a career in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics as not only achievable but also thrilling and deeply fulfilling. This event is open to everyone – brothers, sisters, cousins, parents, and grandparents – and it always will be. But, our educational message for this event will always be on reducing barriers for females in STEM until that barrier does not exist. In today’s fast-evolving world, where change is constant, connecting college with career is more crucial than ever. As our global landscape advances, WSU Everett takes pride in being agile and responsive to industry needs. Our programs in Cybersecurity, Data Analytics, Medicine, Engineering, Sustainable Agriculture, and more are designed to ensure that all students are well-prepared for the jobs of the future." We will be running another event in March, so look out for future announcements and opportunities to participate!

  • We are thrilled to share that the Bank of America Charitable Foundation has awarded a generous $10,000 gift in support of Dr. Joe Gladstone’s impactful work in tribal economic development through business management science! This crucial funding will enable meaningful engagement with the tribal and urban communities across the Salish Sea (Puget Sound) region served by WSU Everett, fostering and strengthening relationships with our indigenous neighbors. Bank of America continues to be an incredible partner, and we’re excited to collaborate with their leadership to explore new opportunities that align our missions. Together, we remain committed to serving our community and driving positive change. Thank you, Bank of America, for your support and partnership! #BankOfAmerica #TribalEconomicDevelopment #CommunitySupport #LandGrantMission

  • Honored to host Rep. Vandana Slatter, Rep. Julio Cortes, Sen. John Lovick, Rep. Gerry Pollet, and Maddy Thompson (Senior Policy Advisor, Office of the Governor) at WSU Everett for a meaningful discussion about our MESA program. Sezi Fleming, MESA WA State Director, facilitated a powerful conversation, bringing together MESA center leaders Rick Flores (WSU Everett) and Dr. Marian Zappala (EvCC) to showcase our collaborative efforts. Two inspiring students shared firsthand how MESA is opening doors to opportunities in STEM, highlighting the program’s impact and growth! ??? We deeply appreciate our legislators’ time, advocacy, and attention as we continue to grow and support future leaders in our community. Together, we are building a stronger, more inclusive future. ???? #MESA #WSUEverett #STEMEducation #CommunityImpact

It was a great pleasure to participate with WSU colleagues Rabindra Nanda and Arezoo Zare in the 4th Annual Seattle Fusion Week, held Oct. 21-23, 2024 in Downtown Seattle and at WSU Everett (Go Cougs!) and Everett Community College. Sponsored by the Clean Tech Alliance and expertly executed by CEO Mel Clark, Lindsay McCormick, and colleagues, the meeting featured over 268 attendees, including an enthusiastic speech by Governor Jay Inslee on Tuesday afternoon. Topics discussed by representatives of the Pacific NW’s very active fusion industry, academic, national laboratory, government, non-profit, and other partners included development of the fusion workforce, the fusion industry supply chain, and community engagement in fusion. I presented an overview talk on fusion science and commercialization, and Dr. J.P. Allain, Director of the Department of Energy Office of Fusion Energy Sciences, described plans for public-private partnerships to advance the fusion industry. There were also panels and presentations focused on high school and college students, government policy, and permitting. It was a pleasure to meet with numerous organizations involved in fusion, including PNNL, UW, UCSD, Colorado State University, the University of Nevada/Reno, and fusion companies (Marvel Fusion, Xcimer Energy, Longview Fusion Energy Systems, Blue Laser Fusion, Kyoto Fusioneering, General Atomics, Tokamak Energy, Avalanche Energy, Pacific Fusion, Fuse Energy Technologies, and Zap Energy) from the Pacific NW and beyond. Motivated by very strong recent technical progress in fusion, this event has steadily grown in size, visibility, and influence. The success of this meeting demonstrated the importance of fusion energy in meeting WA State’s ambitious clean energy goals in the coming years. #WSU #cleanenergy #fusionenergy #economicdevelopment #renewableenergy #cleantechalliance #DOE #jayinslee

The IEEE Seattle Section and Education Society Chapter had the honor of hosting Prof. Joe Decuir for a talk titled "Planning for a Successful Engineering Career" at Washington State University's Everett campus. Over 50 engineering students attended, both in person and virtually. The event was received with overwhelmingly positive feedback, with students praising it as insightful, impactful, and engaging. As the Chair of the IEEE Education Chapter, I am deeply grateful for the support of professionals like Prof. Decuir. The IEEE Seattle Section remains committed to providing essential resources and guidance to help the next generation of engineers thrive. #IEEEDAY #IEEEEDUCATION #SeattleSection #WSUEVERETT
