In this article, Professors Daniel Mallinson, Ph.D. and Lee Hannah analyze the uncertainty surrounding the possible reclassification of marijuana in the United States. Drawing on their book Green Rush: The Rise of Medical Marijuana in the United States (New York University Press), the authors explain how state policies have challenged federal prohibition since 1996 and why the recent government recommendation to move marijuana from Schedule I to Schedule III continues to face political and regulatory obstacles. The article examines the effects of this reclassification on tax policy, medical research, and the legal framework. Last week, I had the honor of returning to #Dayton, Ohio, for a special occasion. Wright State University acknowledged me and a select group of exceptional alumni during this year's Homecoming. It was heartwarming to reunite with my family from Cincy, reconnect with former wrestlers from Chaminade-Julienne, see colleagues from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, catch up with my thesis advisor from my master's program, and spend the night at the world-famous Hope Hotel, where my first boss and spiritual godfather Richard Holbrooke brokered the Dayton Peace Accords. Dayton and Wright State University College of Liberal Arts served as the launchpad for my quarter-century journey in public service.
