Despite economic headwinds, some consumers are ready to spend big this holiday season. In the new 2024 U.S. Holiday Shopping Monitor from WSJ Intelligence, 4 in 5 readers of The Wall Street Journal say they're planning to spend the same amount or more than last year. Expect big-ticket items under the tree, as readers are two times as likely to purchase an item that costs $5,000 or more compared to last year. They’re also 33% more likely to buy a luxury or designer purchase versus 2023. The report found 87% plan to research and purchase gifts online. Malls and brick-and-mortar shops will likely still be bustling: 55% plan to research online and purchase in-store and 52% plan to both research and purchase in-store.
