Roughly 7,000 dedicated staff members make it their daily mission to achieve the vision and mission of the medical center. Those who come through our doors come to heal, stay healthy, help others, teach the next generation, practice quality medicine and take part in cutting-edge clinical research. WRNMMC is the combined legacy of National Naval Medical Center and Walter Reed Army Medical Center, having brought the two iconic medical facilities together in September of 2011, as decreed by the Base Realignment and Closure law of 2005.

We proudly celebrate Ms. Karina Smith, Health Technician with the?Armed Services Blood Program (ASBP)?Mobile Team at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, for receiving the prestigious 2024 Angels of the Battlefield Award. Hailing from Santas, S?o Paulo, Brazil, Smith is the first civilian to be honored with this award, recognizing her extraordinary bravery and quick thinking during a routine blood drive at?Fort George G. Meade?on May 2, 2024. On that day, Smith’s calm and decisive actions saved the life of a military spouse who became critically ill after donating blood. Her ability to lead the team through life-saving measures until emergency services arrived showcased the very essence of dedication and excellence in health care. Reflecting on the experience, Smith shared that even in low-risk situations, life-altering challenges can arise. And, being prepared to act decisively can truly make a difference. She added that this award is not just for her, but for the entire team. Together, they demonstrated the power of teamwork and compassion. Smith’s commitment, inspired by her father’s service as a WWII veteran, reflects her unwavering dedication to the well-being of military members and their families. This recognition underscores the vital role that every member of the?#ASBP?plays in supporting those who serve. Let’s take a moment to honor Smith for her courage and service. #MemoryMonday - Cliff Holtz, the new President and CEO of the American Red Cross, recently visited Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for the first time. Partnering with the American Red Cross of the National Capital and Greater Chesapeake Region, Holtz learned about Red Cross programming and met with members of the 500-strong volunteer team, including many of the 20 in leadership roles. During his visit, Holtz was briefed by hospital director, U.S. Navy Capt. (Dr.) Melissa Austin, toured the Neurobehavioral Inpatient Unit and the Department of Rehabilitation—which hosts the largest concentration of volunteers—and later joined the team for lunch where details were shared about the programs they manage and their support for our community. Thank you, Mr. Holtz, for taking the time to visit and engage with our team, and to the incredible Red Cross volunteers at Walter Reed for your continued dedication to supporting our military families. We are #OneTeam indeed!
