It was only natural for her to turn her passion into a career in sports law. Reflecting on her journey, Judy shared, “I made the decision that I was going to do what I had dreamed of doing for many years. One day, I was going to do something in a field to represent athletes and coaches. I knew this was something I wanted to do, something I had to do. I like being a counselor to the athletes and coaches I serve. ICYMI: WLJ Labor and Employment team members Jane Kim and Daveante Jones recently presented at the 2024 Arkansas SHRM State Conference. Jane was part of the attorney panel discussion on laws with ethical obligations, identifying ways to make the workplace safer and more positive, and best practices for creating an environment built on trust and honesty in compliance with laws and regulations. Daveante’s session, “Accommodations in the Workplace: More Than Just Disabilities,” explored the duty to accommodate employees under a variety of laws for a variety of reasons, including disabilities, sincerely-held religious beliefs, pregnancy/childbirth-related conditions and other potentially protected categories.

A recent article in Arkansas Money & Politics highlights how Arkansas firms are keeping pace with ever-evolving labor laws, a topic every employer and HR professional should follow. WLJ’s own Labor & Employment team leader, Jane Kim, shared her insights. “The national trends are what we’re seeing in Arkansas, too, because most of the federal laws apply to most employers. Employers need to be very cognizant of what’s happening nationally, just so they can make sure they’re in compliance.” From DOL to non-compete agreements to discrimination and harassment, frequent changes at both the national and state levels make staying aware of these trends crucial for compliance and workplace success. WLJ attorneys MaryScott Polk Timmis and Cole Henderson authored an article on the Corporate Transparency Act (CTA): “Shining a Light on Corporate Transparency: What the New Corporate Act Means for You.” In this timely piece, MaryScott and Cole break down the CTA, which mandates that many entities will need to report information on who ultimately owns and controls them. This reporting obligation requires all “reporting companies” to submit beneficial ownership information (BOI) directly to FinCEN through a secure, no-fee system. Importantly, the information will be stored in a protected, non-public database. If your company is affected by this new requirement, you won’t want to miss this information!
