Air pollution constitutes a major global environmental and health issue. In 2019, air pollution was responsible for 1.67 million fatalities in India. Research suggests that varying by city, 2% to 24% of municipal solid waste is incinerated, hence intensifying local air pollution levels. For the past five years, Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur has been tirelessly working to keep the city's air clean and has successfully reduced the levels of PM10. Continuing the efforts to improve the city's air quality, from March 11th to 13th, 2025, Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur, in collaboration with WRI India, organized a three-day visioning workshop titled 'Workshop on Gorakhpur's Roadmap to Open Waste Burning Free City by 2027' at Courtyard by Marriott, Gorakhpur. The workshop has brought together experts, senior officials, and representatives of government organizations to discuss strategies for achieving this goal, with a roadmap being developed based on the suggestions from these discussions. Honorable Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava inaugurated the event on March 11th. He stated that Gorakhpur has taken significant steps to reduce air pollution, and the Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur has now resolved to eliminate open garbage burning. To develop a strategy for making Gorakhpur free from open garbage burning, experts from across the country visited multiple locations in the city. During these visits, officials briefed them about SWM and other municipal initiatives. The experts participated in the workshop include Prof. Brajesh K Dubey, Mr. Ulhas Parlikar, Mr. Anil Kumar Ramakrishna, Mr. Atin Biswas, Ms. Arundhati Kamat, Mr. Avinash Singh, Mr. Amogh Bhongale, Dr. Shailendra Kumar Yadav, Ms. Nidhi Sharma, Mr. Abhay Chandel, Dr. Rajiv Khurana, CMC, FIMC, Dr. Khaiwal Ravindra, Mr. Ajeet Sharma, and Mr. Vimlesh Nigam. On the second day, experts held in-depth discussions on the strategic plan of Gorakhpur to make it 'free from open burning of garbage by 2027.' More than twenty-five councilors and officials of Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur also participated in this discussion, focusing on the challenges, measures, and opportunities in strengthening waste management and ending the practice of burning waste. The participants were divided into four subject-based groups, i.e., waste segregation, waste collection and transportation, waste recycling supply chain, and landfill management, and they were invited to give their suggestions on problems and measures. On the third day, the Honorable Chief Minister, Shri Yogi Adityanath, graced the workshop by speaking at the closing ceremony. The Honorable CM emphasized the importance of participation from public and elected representatives and campaigns for improving air quality and environmental protection in the state. Dr Prashant Gargava, NCAP Director, MoEFCC, also highlighted the exceptional progress in improving the city's air quality in the last five years. #airpollution #openwasteburning #cleanairforall #nagarnigamgorakhpur #wriindia #ACAAS

The road to sustainable mobility is not a straight path—but together, we are making progress. It was inspiring to open Transforming Transportation and see so many old friends and new faces committed to transforming transportation. Over the past two decades, we’ve built a global community with a singular goal: making it easier, safer, and more affordable for people—especially those with the least access—to move where they need to go, without harming the planet. But we know that people-centric innovation alone isn’t enough. We need to scale solutions—and that means securing the right policies and financing to make change happen at speed and at scale. 2025 is a defining year. With COP30 in Belem setting the next level of ambition for NDCs, we must go beyond targets and ensure sectoral plans, national policies, and real financial commitments are in place. That's why #TTDC25 is such an important moment to share, to learn, and to align our efforts for global impact. Let’s deliver solutions that create a more sustainable, inclusive transport future for all.

At #Uddeshya2025, we discussed how financing inclusive metro systems requires shifting focus from infrastructure alone to the lived experiences of people. To build truly gender-responsive transport, financial institutions must invest in safe first and last-mile connectivity, while economic analyses of metro and BRT projects must integrate gender-based interventions and clear monitoring frameworks. Operational decisions, like ensuring well-lit environments for women's safety, need to be prioritized, along with multi-utility metro stations and robust pedestrian infrastructure to enhance access. Crucially, mandating gender-responsive design at the national policy level and fostering institutional coordination between agencies will be key to creating sustainable, accessible, and equitable urban mobility systems. ? #MobiliseHER #Uddeshya2025 #GenderAndMobility #InclusiveTransport #SustainableCities

As a father to a spirited and endlessly curious 13-year-old, I have learned that designing cities and raising adolescents have more in common than you would think. Both demand creative, innovative thinking and a willingness to listen. Recognizing this, WRI India is championing the voices of our young citizens in building cities that work for all. One such initiative recently was YuvaScape 2025, a four-day public space improvement event that saw enthusiastic adolescents in Bhoomiya Basti (Jaipur) reimagine their neighborhood park to ensure cleanliness, inclusion, play and interaction. This collaborative design process is guided by WRI India's Public Spaces Assessment Framework (PSAF) that has inputs of over 800+ adolescents across two cities (Jaipur and Bhubaneswar) co-developed as part of the Fondation Botnar supported and WRI India led "Safe, Vibrant and Healthy Public Spaces" initiative. The Framework helps communities evaluate public spaces based on adolescents' needs. This unique model of collaboration brings together adolescents, local authorities and communities to shape inclusive, accessible neighborhoods that work for all.
