Air pollution constitutes a major global environmental and health issue. In 2019, air pollution was responsible for 1.67 million fatalities in India. Research suggests that varying by city, 2% to 24% of municipal solid waste is incinerated, hence intensifying local air pollution levels. For the past five years, Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur has been tirelessly working to keep the city's air clean and has successfully reduced the levels of PM10. Continuing the efforts to improve the city's air quality, from March 11th to 13th, 2025, Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur, in collaboration with WRI India, organized a three-day visioning workshop titled 'Workshop on Gorakhpur's Roadmap to Open Waste Burning Free City by 2027' at Courtyard by Marriott, Gorakhpur. The workshop has brought together experts, senior officials, and representatives of government organizations to discuss strategies for achieving this goal, with a roadmap being developed based on the suggestions from these discussions. Honorable Mayor Dr. Manglesh Srivastava inaugurated the event on March 11th. He stated that Gorakhpur has taken significant steps to reduce air pollution, and the Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur has now resolved to eliminate open garbage burning. To develop a strategy for making Gorakhpur free from open garbage burning, experts from across the country visited multiple locations in the city. During these visits, officials briefed them about SWM and other municipal initiatives. The experts participated in the workshop include Prof. Brajesh K Dubey, Mr. Ulhas Parlikar, Mr. Anil Kumar Ramakrishna, Mr. Atin Biswas, Ms. Arundhati Kamat, Mr. Avinash Singh, Mr. Amogh Bhongale, Dr. Shailendra Kumar Yadav, Ms. Nidhi Sharma, Mr. Abhay Chandel, Dr. Rajiv Khurana, CMC, FIMC, Dr. Khaiwal Ravindra, Mr. Ajeet Sharma, and Mr. Vimlesh Nigam. On the second day, experts held in-depth discussions on the strategic plan of Gorakhpur to make it 'free from open burning of garbage by 2027.' More than twenty-five councilors and officials of Nagar Nigam Gorakhpur also participated in this discussion, focusing on the challenges, measures, and opportunities in strengthening waste management and ending the practice of burning waste. The participants were divided into four subject-based groups, i.e., waste segregation, waste collection and transportation, waste recycling supply chain, and landfill management, and they were invited to give their suggestions on problems and measures. On the third day, the Honorable Chief Minister, Shri Yogi Adityanath, graced the workshop by speaking at the closing ceremony. The Honorable CM emphasized the importance of participation from public and elected representatives and campaigns for improving air quality and environmental protection in the state.
