The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to deport unaccompanied children and the families that sponsor them. Rather than further traumatizing vulnerable kids, the US should help unaccompanied children settle into their homes and communities, secure legal representation, and attend school. Children should always be treated as children. Read our latest post: https://lnkd.in/eZ9y99aB

WRC's Melanie Nezer spoke with Natalia Bonilla on the Womanhood & International Relations Podcast about the impact of the new immigration & humanitarian laws, policies, and priorities on women and families in the US, at the border, and around the world - and their impact on all of us. Listen here:
???For this week's #podcast episode, I'm excited to share an insightful conversation with Melanie Nezer, Vice President of Advocacy and External Relations at Women's Refugee Commission. We examined how outdated U.S. immigration laws, combined with the Trump Administration's executive orders and enforcement tactics, have exploited existing misconceptions about #migration, resulting in both short-term and long-term consequences— intended and unintended. We explored whether anti-immigration discourses and policies are genuinely focused on 'protecting' women, both domestically and abroad, or driven by other underlying goals and agendas. We also discussed how recent executive actions—such as the repeal of the Ending #SensitiveZones Policy, the #USAID Funding Freeze, and the reinstatement of the #GlobalGagRule — fail to protect vulnerable groups, including women, children, and victims of different forms of violence, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. Moreover, we highlighted the critical link between rising U.S. and global military spending and the violent conflicts that are driving populations to flee their home countries in search of safety abroad. ??You can listen to the Womanhood & International Relations Podcast new episode here: https://lnkd.in/e8aRjDVj and subscribe to our? #newsletter community here https://lnkd.in/eJ7Zf6n4

We know that sexual violence is extremely widespread in emergencies and that the risk of sexual violence increases for everyone during a crisis – regardless of their gender, age, or disability status. Adolescent boys and young men face huge barriers to care, partly because of the lack of dedicated services and trained providers, and partly because of the shame and social stigma survivors face that keep them from seeking help. WRC has trained frontline humanitarians to run peer support groups that provide opportunities to connect and build relationships that promote health, healing, and well-being.

The Women’s Refugee Commission is gravely concerned about the irreparable harm that restarting family detention will cause to parents and children. WRC has seen firsthand that there is no safe or humane way to incarcerate families. We must reverse course. https://lnkd.in/eCjPjkjb?

At a UN meeting yesterday, the US stated that it "rejects and denounces the Sustainable Development Goals, and will no longer affirm them as a matter of course." It's no surprise that the US administration is doing everything it can to undermine multilateralism, equality, and social justice. But progress on the SDGs have been at risk since before the Trump administration came into office. Last week, Lily Jacobi and I wrote about how new cuts to humanitarian and development budgets by multiple donors - compounded by the devastating cuts to USAID these past weeks - will reverse decades of progress on poverty reduction, global health and gender equality. This is in a time of skyrocketing humanitarian need and a growing backlash on gender equality. The SDGs aren't a panacea - but at their best they represent a shared vision for an inclusive and equitable world, where civil society, governments and donors collectively commit to protecting the vulnerable and advancing gender, racial, and economic equality.
