Our new WRAL Investigative Documentary, Broken: Foster Care in North Carolina, premieres Thursday. The tragic deaths of two adopted children, Blake and London Deven, and the arrest of their adoptive mother, have exposed deep flaws in the child welfare system. How did one woman, with nine aliases, adopt five children from three different counties in North Carolina? What gaps in policy and oversight allowed these children to disappear for years before anyone noticed? And what needs to change to prevent this from happening again? This is more than just a true crime story. It’s a call to action for policymakers, child welfare advocates, and anyone who believes the system should work for the children it’s meant to protect. ?? I had an excellent time emcee the Economic Forecast: Launch 2025 event in Raleigh, including moderating the panel discussion! It was thought provoking to get insight on the macro and local economies from people who know it well. Events such as this one are critical because it allows experts to go beyond the news headlines and give necessary perspective on the state of our economic world. With a new presidential administration, new policies on the way, and an ever-changing world being confronted with AI at every turn, Launch 2025 provided an important moment of discussion to highlight areas of the economy that are of concern to people. Inflation, rising cost in childcare, AI / workforce, possible higher tariffs—much was discussed.
