Waste in humanitarian Operations: Reduction and Minimisation
关于我们
WORM is a Horizon Europe project aiming to design guidelines and support actions for circular economy in the humanitarian sector. It integrates bio-based technological solutions, leverages procurement for waste reduction, improves waste management methods and prioritises the sustainable livelihoods of waste pickers. WORM focuses on two selected settings : field hospital deployments and humanitarian livelihood programmes with a waste picking component. Following a collaborative and multi-actor approach, WORM brings together medical and humanitarian organisations, procurement service providers, logistics providers, waste management services and academic partners. Coordinated by Hanken School of Economics (Finland), it gathers partners from Netherlands, Germany, Norway, France, Croatia, Kenya and Vietnam. WORM has started in January 2024 and is a two-year collaborative European project funded by the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101135392. Views and opinions expressed are however those of the author(s) only and do not necessarily reflect those of the European Union or the European Commission. Neither the European Union nor the granting authority can be held responsible for them.

?? Did you know series#1 What if reducing waste started before a product is even made? And why does it matter? ?? Because waste management sustainability isn't just about waste treatment, it’s about reducing the footprint from the initial extraction of resources to the final stage of disposal and end-of-life management! To address this challenge, the WORM project used Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to compare the environmental performance of bio-based (starch-based bioplastics) vs. fossil-based materials. LCA helps to identify the environmental "hotspots" throughout a product's life cycle so that appropriate action can be taken to optimise a product's environmental performance while ensuring its functionality! Key steps of LCA: ?? Defining goals & scope ?? Inventory analysis ?? Impact assessment ?? Interpreting results ? ?? ???[#fieldtrip] ???? In December, Margot Rocheteau, a PhD student at the Hanken School of Economics, went on a field trip to Vietnam to learn about local practices in managing waste and related challenges. During this field trip, she: ??? Conducted interviews with medical staff and representatives from humanitarian organisations regarding responses to crises and sustainability in aid projects ??? Visited a waste treatment center to understand the practices and gaps in infrastructure ?? Participated in Nestlé's packaging workshop, learning about the regulations aiming to reduce packaging waste and opportunities for collaboration between corporations and local organizations ?? Throughout the field trip, she learnt more about Vietnam’s regulatory framework concerning safety and environmental standards and how these impact waste management practices. These included the need for improved waste segregation systems, stronger enforcement mechanisms, and greater community engagement. The support of the WORM's partners RMIT University Vietnam and VNRC was invaluable! #wormeuproject #wastemanagement #humanitarian #circulareconomy #biobasedproducts #fieldhospitals #environment #emergencymedicalteams #humanitarianwastemanagement #humanitariancirulareconomy #wastedisposal #wastetreatment #humanitarianprocurement
