On Indigenous People’s Day, WorldOregon acknowledges and honors that the land now known as Portland sits on the unceded territory of the original peoples of this land: the Multnomah, Wasco, Kathlamet, Clackamas, Cowlitz, Bands of Chinook, Tualatin Kalapuya, Molalla, and many other Tribes who prospered in thriving communities along the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. Today, our region’s diverse and vibrant indigenous communities are descended from over 380 federally recognized Tribes, with the Grande Ronde, Siletz, and Cowlitz tribes living in the area. We extend our deepest gratitude to those who have stewarded this land, and offer our respect to the Native communities and their elders, past, present, and future. We remain committed to honoring, engaging and learning from these Native communities as we fulfill our mission to connect Oregon and SW Washington with the world.

Many thanks to Unitus Community Credit Union for supporting WorldOregon! On October 10 we received a $25,000 donation as part of their Community Impact Program, celebrating our upcoming 75th year anniversary in 2025 and our ongoing initiatives that connect the people of Oregon and SW Washington with the world. Unitus' gift to WorldOregon was especially appreciated given the challenges facing nonprofits these days. Unitus is a strong partner of WorldOregon's mission to better connect our community with the world, and with CEO Steven Stapp as Chair of our Board of Trustees, this is a truly impactful step in their ongoing sponsorship!
???? Celebrating International Credit Union Day at Unitus! ???? We got an early start on the global celebrations with our “Paella for Peace” event, showcasing the power of community and the international credit union movement. Spearheaded by Unitus President and CEO, Steven Stapp, the event highlighted our global connection, honoring our heritage and coming together for the collective good. "For me, paella is all about enjoying the moment; coming together to create a meal as an act of love," shared Steve. "It was an honor to share this tradition with our credit union and community partners." During the celebration, we awarded $125,000 in Community Impact Grants, including a $25,000 donation to the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions (WFCU). “This donation in support of our efforts to grow and strengthen the global credit union movement will have meaningful impact on people around the world," said WFCU President Mike Reuter, CFRE, CUDE. "Part of the funds go toward a future Global Bridges trip, our exchange program that connects credit unions from different countries for advocacy, education, and celebration. Grants were also awarded to other outstanding partner organizations like the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO), WorldOregon, GoWest Credit Union Association Foundation, World Central Kitchen, and the National Credit Union Foundation's CUAid Disaster Relief Program. Each grant represents our ongoing commitment to the philosophy of "people helping people." We’re excited to continue our #ICUDay2024 celebrations on October 17, with interactive heritage map activities at all Unitus branches. ?? Excited that local partner Clean Water Services is a leading partner in this global cooperation on urban water security!
Last week, the Water Smart Engagements (WiSE) program celebrated 5 years of global cooperation on urban water security. WiSE is a pioneering peer-to-peer initiative that pairs water utilities in Southeast Asia with U.S. counterparts to exchange insights and innovations to advance climate-resilient water management systems. Funded by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans and International Environmental and Scientific Affairs (OES) and managed by the U.S. Water Partnership, WiSE is implemented in collaboration with the Water Environment Federation (WEF), Global Ties U.S., and local community-based members of the Global Ties Network (Global Ties Miami, Global New Orleans, Global Ties San Francisco, the International Institute of Wisconsin, WorldChicago, and WorldOregon). Reflects Christopher Rich, Executive Director of the U.S. Water Partnership: "WiSE has promoted sustainable water management for 10 cities – advancing the global effort to achieve universal and equitable access to safe and effectively managed water and sanitation services without increasing greenhouse gas emissions." Outcomes have included the translation of a technical manual for water operators, memorandums of understanding between pairings, and the development of concrete action plans for technical assistance and training.
