Since Captain Jill Hughes started sailing as a teenager, she quickly discovered her passion for community, challenge, and a sense of purpose aboard tall ships. Years later, she has seen that passion fluorish in the students who have come aboard Roseway and Denis Sullivan during our programs. Students may come aboard wide-eyed and a little nervous, but eventually, it all clicks, and that's Jill's favorite part, when "the students realize they're capable of operating the vessel without the professional crew's help. This week, due to an environmental concern on the third floor of the 100+ year old Boston Fish Pier, World Ocean School offices were moved into a temporary space across the street at Seaport East, 2 Seaport Lane. We should be here at least six months. I’ve worked in basements, “Class B” office buildings, and historic buildings, but never in a fancy building like this with 24/7 security and plenty of amenities, although our space is “in transition.” It is temporary, and we left a lot of stuff behind in the hopes of reuniting in the spring. In the meantime, we are going to enjoy the views.

World Ocean School invites students ages 17-20 to join the Eastern Seaboard Adventure Voyage. This exciting new program offers a five-week journey on board the tall ship?Denis Sullivan, starting in mid-September and ending in late October. For any of you who know me well, you know I am fervently passionate about World Ocean School. This organization impacted my life so profoundly that I have made my career about making transformative opportunities happen for as many people and kids as possible. 14 years ago, I spent my first Christmas holiday in St. Croix aboard Roseway and never could have imagined the life that has since unfolded. As Executive Director for the past 6.5 years, we have navigated hurricanes, the pandemic, and countless other challenges. I am proud that we have continued to innovate and build more impactful programs through all of that. Today, students from Boston, Milwaukee, New York, and St. Croix (all receiving full scholarships to participate) have been wrapping up a voyage together throughout the USVI over the past week— our inaugural Winter Ambassador Program built off our love of our Summer Ambassador Program (https://lnkd.in/edJ9m6-K). I have spent my whole career providing transformational experiences to young people. I became a sailor and involved with traditional sailing and community sailing later in life. World Ocean School and Piers Park Sailing Center are the two organizations I work with the most. Here's a video that explains how all this ties together.
