We do this through transformative opportunities that provide: - transferable life skills and character development - inspiration for academic and vocational advancement - strong relationships with caring and responsible adults - a safe learning environment World Ocean School currently owns and operates the 1925 historic landmark Schooner Roseway as well as the Great Lakes Schooner Denis Sullivan as its primarily educational platforms.

At World Ocean School, based in Boston and St. Croix, learners take on exciting challenges that build trust, leadership, and teamwork. In this article, VP of Programs & Advancement, Jill Hughes shares how experiences like navigating narrow waterways or climbing the rigging give learners real responsibilities, and teach them to rise to the occasion. “When you trust a young adult to do something, I am always impressed by how they step up.” Through hands-on experiences at the helm, in the rigging, and alongside their crew, learners navigate challenges that mirror those on shore, forging skills that stay with them long after they leave the deck. "Tall ships are not just vessels; they are living classrooms that teach valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork, and community living." Since Captain Jill Hughes started sailing as a teenager, she quickly discovered her passion for community, challenge, and a sense of purpose aboard tall ships. Years later, she has seen that passion fluorish in the students who have come aboard Roseway and Denis Sullivan during our programs. Students may come aboard wide-eyed and a little nervous, but eventually, it all clicks, and that's Jill's favorite part, when "the students realize they're capable of operating the vessel without the professional crew's help. This week, due to an environmental concern on the third floor of the 100+ year old Boston Fish Pier, World Ocean School offices were moved into a temporary space across the street at Seaport East, 2 Seaport Lane. We should be here at least six months. I’ve worked in basements, “Class B” office buildings, and historic buildings, but never in a fancy building like this with 24/7 security and plenty of amenities, although our space is “in transition.” It is temporary, and we left a lot of stuff behind in the hopes of reuniting in the spring. In the meantime, we are going to enjoy the views.

World Ocean School invites students ages 17-20 to join the Eastern Seaboard Adventure Voyage. This exciting new program offers a five-week journey on board the tall ship?Denis Sullivan, starting in mid-September and ending in late October. As they sail from #Boston, to #Maine, to #Charleston, SC, students will not only learn the fundamentals of tall ship sailing but also have the chance to make new friends and participate in the adventure of a lifetime.
