? Spotlight on Innovation in Women’s Health: Meagan Furnivall Petter, Founder & CEO of Empower Elle! ? As a WE-Empower! Program alumna Meagan is transforming women’s healthcare with a revolutionary birthing gown that prioritizes dignity, skin-to-skin contact, and evidence-based care. Designed to support mothers and birthing parents through labour and birth, her gown preserves dignity, facilitates essential bonding, and aligns with WHO guidelines for optimal care. Through Empower Elle, Meagan is addressing critical gaps in maternal care. We’re proud to have been part of her journey and can’t wait to see her work's positive impact on women’s health. Thank you, Meagan, for your commitment to advancing women’s healthcare! ?? #WEmpower #WomensHealth #GenderDataGap #Innovation #GlobalEntrepreneurshipWeek #HealthEquity #EmpowerElle Morrissette Entrepreneurship Western University
It was an excellent way to launch Global Entrepreneurship Week yesterday at Morrissette Entrepreneurship! I have learned so much in this accelerator program and can’t believe how fast it is flying by. The students kept asking how we all in the accelerator had “figured it all out.” We laughed and told them we hadn’t “figured it all out yet.” Anyone considering applying to one of Morrisette's programs should go for it. What amazes me is how little people still know about women’s health. I think I spend the majority of my time educating people on the gaps in funding and research and less time talking about the product I am working on. These are necessary conversations, for sure! Things to be aware of: 1?? The gender data gap has existed for hundreds of years and it is born out of historical biases in research, tech, innovation and policy where male perspectives have been the default perspective. We are missing important information and data that help us understand the unique health challenges women face because we are not just smaller men. 2?? It is problematic for women and marginalized groups because it leads to products, policies and environments that don’t meet their needs. 3?? The gender data gap is particularly harmful in healthcare because, as a result of these (research) gaps, women can experience delayed diagnosis and treatment (leading to unnecessary deaths), inappropriate prescribing of drugs and drug dosages, a lack of understanding of women-specific conditions resulting in prolonged and unnecessary (or ignored) pain (endometriosis!), limited effectiveness of diagnostic tools and medical devices as they were tested and created for men, which can limit the effectiveness for women, and limited understanding of the effects of some medications in pregnancy (to name a few). 4?? These effects of the gender data gap on women ripple out into society by having reduced workforce participation, contribute to lower household income, increased healthcare costs, negative impacts on the growth, development and health of their children and gender inequality in health directly impacts long-term economic prosperity. This is why it is so important to support, donate or invest in women’s health research and innovation! We need more female founders working on the issues women face because their unique perspectives will help to address the very real problems women face. Thank you to the Children's Health Foundation, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute (LHSCRI), WORLDiscoveries, Carmina Young and Western University for supporting me in improving birth experiences and aiming to reduce the maternal mental health burden and the #genderdatagap, #londonontmidwifery
