Reflecting on our amazing experience at AASA last week! Every year, we look forward to this unique opportunity to meet new superintendents and catch up with familiar faces. This year, it was especially rewarding to connect with leaders from our school and district partners and work on some coalition building in person. A special thanks to superintendents Jason Berg, Renee Corneille, Dr. Karen Cheser, and Lawrence Bo Wright for presenting with us at our breakout session, Transformative Leadership for an Ever-changing World. Their creative approach to leadership in these complex times is truly inspiring. ??We just kicked off the first Changemaker Hub with our partners at Durango School District 9-R! We believe that students should have a voice in shaping the future of education, which is why we're excited to collaborate with them on this series of Changemaker Hubs. Students, educators, and community leaders came together to reflect on their learning experiences and reimagine a more inclusive, student-centered education system. One of the activities included imagining a school system without traditional structures like bell schedules, grades, or content areas—sparking creative ideas for personalized learning and mastery-based progression. ??“The most important thing is connection. People coming together. When people come together there’s love, there’s support, there’s safety, there’s not as much bullying. I find that connection is the biggest aspect of a successful school.” - Student Participant These conversations are at the heart of our Changemaker Hubs—empowering young people to drive meaningful change in their schools and communities. We’re excited to lead the conversation on how student-led advocacy can drive meaningful change, drawing from our work with Ella Baker Global Studies and Humanities School in Minneapolis. At this year’s Leading Courageously for Racial Equity Conference hosted by the Department of Educational Leadership at Minnesota State University, Mankato, our Professional Learning Facilitator, Molly Carina Dengler, will share how 4th graders turned classroom learning into real-world impact — designing a more inclusive playground through research, collaboration, and community engagement. These 2024 NAEP numbers speak volumes about the state of education and suggest that piecemeal solutions—like SEL, PBL, or STEM—are not enough on their own. While these initiatives are valuable, focusing on isolated areas without a holistic approach isn't driving the academic outcomes we need. At World Savvy, we know that the key to reversing these trends lies in addressing the entire student experience. This means: ??Making learning relevant by engaging students in real-world problems that directly impact their communities. ??Supporting teachers with the tools and frameworks they need to connect classroom learning to the broader world. ??Fostering essential workforce-ready skills like creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving, which are critical for success in today’s world. Rather than relying on siloed approaches, we need to take a broader view that integrates these strategies into a unified framework. An update on Transforming Education Through Storytelling When The Wildling joined forces with World Savvy last year, we envisioned a future where storytelling connects students to one another, their educators, and their learning in deeper and more meaningful ways. One year in, we're proud to share the impact we've made together: 20,000 students reached across 8 states, including Minnesota. Building bridges through activities like the “Identity Iceberg,” fostering self-awareness and respect for differences at all age levels.
