??Over the last several years, state and federal decarbonization policies have driven a rapid increase in the production & consumption of bio-based diesel. ??But with a limited supply of sustainable feedstocks as well as uncertainties around pollution and impacts on workers and communities, a shift to “biorefineries” could be misguided and requires careful consideration. Learn why?? https://go.wri.org/FrPTvb #fossilfuels #biorefinery #biofuels #refinery #california #climateaction #climate #decarbonization #emissions

??According to Global Forest Watch, tropical primary forest loss was the equivalent of ten football fields per minute in 2023. Yet, the current economic incentives still favor chopping down forests. Prioritizing watershed restoration and conservation, city leaders can ensure that?urban growth is water-resilient?and creates lasting benefits??????? #Watersheds are the natural area of land that drain into a common body of water. The consequences of their #degradation are threefold. Without tree cover and healthy soils to absorb rainfall, #cities may lose a critical source for groundwater recharge, leading to water shortages. Not only does the quantity of #water suffer, so does its quality. Without strong roots to protect and anchor the soil, sediment and the chemicals within it are washed into nearby water bodies, often the primary source for a city’s drinking water. That same runoff can turn into floodwater. Many cities that once depended on their watersheds for water now face both increasing scarcity and heightened vulnerability to #extremeweather. There are, however, #naturebasedsolutions to help alleviate these problems. Learn how watershed restoration efforts are starting to deliver positive results in 3 African cities?? https://lnkd.in/er_QgP3H

???Africa’s cities, from large metropolises to smaller towns, are increasingly characterized by growing urban sprawl. ??As cities expand into their hinterlands, they encroach upon watersheds essential to water supply and climate resilience. Many cities depending on their watersheds now face both increasing scarcity and heightened vulnerability to extreme weather. ??There are, however, nature-based solutions to help alleviate these problems. Through a combination of upland foresting and urban greening, watershed restoration efforts are starting to deliver positive results in three African cities?? https://lnkd.in/er_QgP3H #africa #africancities #water #climate #rivers #naturebased #naturebasedsolutions #nbs #riverrestoration #restoration #Kigali #DireDawa #Johannesburg #watersheds #climateregulation #urbanization #nature

Unlike other sectors, land doesn’t just emit carbon — it also removes it. That makes tracking human-driven fluxes from forests especially challenging. National greenhouse gas inventories (NGHGIs) report only human-caused fluxes from managed land — but what counts as “managed” varies: ??? Some countries consider all land managed ??? Others are less specific ??? A few provide maps To strengthen transparency and build understanding across systems, Land & Carbon Lab and the EU Joint Research Centre translated Global Forest Watch’s forest carbon flux model into NGHGI reporting categories — providing a global, independent, spatially explicit view of forest emissions and removals that complements country reporting. ??
