The world faces multiple, simultaneous crises. Widening inequality and economic turmoil threaten communities around the globe. Biodiversity is declining.?The impacts of climate change — from extreme heat to destructive floods — are becoming ever-more threatening. While the transition to a better future has begun, it’s not yet happening at the speed and scale necessary. What the world needs is a great transition. And WRI has the research, partnerships and global reach to help get it right. We envision a new era in which the world can meet people’s needs while curbing climate change and protecting nature. We see a future where everyone can enjoy clean air, walkable cities, vibrant landscapes, nutritious food and affordable energy. Ecosystems are thriving. The climate is stable. We start with rigorous research, work with partners to apply evidence-based approaches globally and in focus countries, and broadly share lessons learned to create systemic change around the world.

????The COP16 biodiversity negotiations officially concluded, with countries agreeing on a strategy to increase finance for biodiversity to $200 billion annually by 2030. Countries also adopted a monitoring framework to track countries’ progress toward the Global Biodiversity Framework targets, including the goals to protect 30% of the world’s land and water and restore 30% of degraded ecosystems by 2030. These outcomes build on the prior outcomes from the COP16 negotiations in Cali, Colombia, which included a voluntary fund for companies to contribute to based on the genetic data from biodiversity they use, and a new permanent body to bring Indigenous Peoples and local communities into the negotiations. The ocean is home to incredible biodiversity, all working together to maintain the delicate balance of marine ecosystems. This balance is not just vital for ocean health but also human health. #WorldWildlifeDay ?? Seagrass meadows, mangroves, and coral reefs act as nurseries for marine life, and absorb carbon, helping regulate our climate. ?? Healthy fish populations support global food security and economies, providing billions of people with essential nutrition and livelihoods. ?? Marine biodiversity contributes to medicine, used in antibiotics, cancer treatments, and other life-saving drugs.

??The increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires in California can be attributed to a combination of natural and human-induced factors, with climate change playing a?central role. ??Rising global temperatures have created hotter, drier conditions across the landscape. This makes fires not only more likely to ignite but also easier to spread. ??The hottest years on record globally —?2023 and 2024?— have seen extreme heat intensify droughts and dry out vegetation, creating an ideal fuel source for wildfires. Southern California is frequently affected by the Santa Ana winds, which bring strong, dry gusts that further fuel the fires and make containment difficult. ???Last year was the hottest on record, and scientists are clear that the world is on track to exceed 1.5°C of global warming. Methane, which traps heat much more effectively than CO2, is a significant part of this problem. ??Methane concentration in the atmosphere has accelerated rapidly since the early 1900s, driven both by human-caused methane emissions and increased methane emissions from natural sources due to human-induced climate change. ??That’s why researchers are exploring atmospheric methane removal as a potential option to reduce warming. Our newest article gathers 5 key things to know: https://go.wri.org/7cMcsb #emissions #GHG #greenhousegases #climatechange #globalwarming #methane #extremeheat #climatetechnology #methaneremoval
