For over 45 years, World Relief Western Washington has partnered with the U.S. Government, local churches and communities, resettled 1,578 refugees in 2024 alone and provided life-changing aid for refugees and immigrants in Western Washington. This week, federal funding for these life-changing programs has been cut abruptly and unexpectedly, creating a devastating funding gap for World Relief Western Washington and hundreds of our peer organizations. We now face unimaginable odds in ensuring malnourished children are fed, pregnant mothers are receiving adequate maternal health services and refugees here in the U.S. are receiving the food and shelter they were promised. Last Friday, we were notified by the U.S. Department of State that all federally funded activities providing initial resettlement support to nearly 500 refugees we’re serving in Western Washington must stop, effective immediately. As a result, we now face a critical gap in funding for the provision of basic needs — including food, shelter, clothing and transportation. After the inauguration, President Trump issued an executive order suspending the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program for at least several months. World Relief laments this and is urging him to reconsider this drastic action. Here is how you can join us in continuing to care for refugees and immigrants in this uncertain time. ?? Today marks the inauguration of President Donald Trump’s second term. At World Relief, we are committed to being a nonpartisan voice for justice, peace and love. As we have with every administration, we pray for President Trump and all elected officials to lead with wisdom, compassion and integrity, mindful of the lives their policies affect across the United States and the world. We especially pray for guidance as they navigate the current unprecedented global displacement crisis. This day is also a time to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., whose words call us to a higher standard of love and justice: "Power without love is reckless and abusive, and love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is power correcting everything that stands against love."
