Before the Bantwana Initiative was founded in 2006, the World Education team saw the impact of coordinated community responses in support of children affected by #HIV. In a community in Uganda, one woman, referred to as “jajja” (grandmother in Luganda), cared for orphaned children, rallying the community to provide free health care and send them to school. Knowing that change comes from mobilizing communities– and that resources were not often reaching those at the local level who need it most– we started to rethink how funding was channeled into Africa. Nearly 20 years later, the Bantwana Initiative is a fully independent and locally led network of three national NGOs in #Zimbabwe, #Eswatini, and #Uganda. Read the full story: https://brnw.ch/21wPRD0

As AI becomes increasingly present in educational settings, it’s important that the people using #AI tools are equipped to apply them effectively. We’re building educators’ skills by: - Hosting GenAI Maker Space events where educators can build foundational AI competencies - Creating resources like the CampGPT Prompt Book to help teachers develop student-centered #GenAI prompts - Outlining questions for educators and decision makers to consider their own capacity to implement AI tools Read more on how we’re working to maintain the balance between automation and human judgment: https://brnw.ch/21wQnV6 #IDE2025 #AIinEducation

Human-centered approaches to using #AI in education bridge the gap between technology and learners. We piloted the use of Google Read Along to help out-of-school girls in #Ghana learn English. Read Along uses AI speech recognition to track progress and provide targeted feedback. While the AI program worked autonomously, the success of the pilot relied on trained mentor teachers and engaged parents to ensure the girls used the tool effectively and regularly. Integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into an educational setting requires a human touch to ensure it’s used appropriately and responsibly. When we look at the continuum of human-AI collaboration, the most effective implementations lie somewhere in the middle, where #AI augments human efforts, streamlining processes or offering insights to educators and learners. This #InternationalEducationDay, we’re spotlighting how we can use human-centered approaches to find the balance between AI and agency in education: https://brnw.ch/21wQe0A #IDE2025 #AIinEducation

Digital literacy unlocks the benefits of #AIinEducation.??? To ensure that #AI is used effectively and responsibly in education settings, we must define and build teachers’ and learners’ foundational digital competencies, and support its intentional use in classrooms. We host trainings for hundreds of educators to hone their skills using AI tools that can enhance instruction. We also pilot the use of AI tools in various contexts and locations to understand its benefits and challenges. Without proper AI literacy for AI users, we risk the negative impacts that emerging technologies can create. "At its core, integration is about managing and delivering health services together in ways that prioritize people, not merely their diseases." This piece by our president and CEO, Muka Chikuba-McLeod, and experts Deborah Goldstein (USAID), Yogan Pillay (Gates Foundation), Beatrice Ajonye (International Community of Women living with HIV Eastern Africa - ICWEA), and Njeri Kamere (The Aurum Institute), explains the need for developing and maintaining integrated, person-centered care models and approaches in the #HIV response. Integrated approaches are proven to lower HIV incidence and AIDS-related mortality, be more cost-effective and sustainable, and benefit the population as a whole.
As the landscape of global health funding and implementation continues to evolve, and as we acknowledge and?celebrate the significant progress achieved, much work remains to be done to end HIV as a global public health threat. To achieve this, we must adapt systems to better meet the needs of people living with HIV, reduce transmission, and simultaneously tackle other health challenges. I’m grateful to Dr. Deborah Goldstein, Yogan Pillay, beatrice ajonye, and Dr. Njeri Kamere for their thought partnership on how we as a global community can integrate HIV programs to drive progress toward these goals and improve health outcomes for all: https://lnkd.in/dhgzzXaa #HIV #HealthSystems #GlobalHealth #IntegratedHealth #PersonCenteredCare #DigitalHealth #EndAIDS JSI, USAID, Gates Foundation, International Community of Women living with HIV Eastern Africa - ICWEA, The Aurum Institute

When expanding access to quality #health care and #education, success is not ticking boxes. It’s about commitment to achieving real results. The key to achieving results is listening to the voices of those impacted by new programs and tools, implementing from the bottom up, and prioritizing human impact over reaching metrics. The Bantwana Initiative was created to direct resources to those at the frontline because community-based interventions work. Now, the Bantwana Regional Network will continue this mission of innovating and taking effective local solutions to scale. #LocalRootsGlobalImpact
