Recent discussions surrounding the Kimberley Process (KP) have been clouded by misinterpretations and unrealistic expectations. In my latest piece I explain why it is crucial to understand that the KP was designed to prevent conflict diamonds from funding rebel movements, not to serve as a financial watchdog. As an organisation, the KP has been highly effective in reducing the volume of conflict diamonds in global trade to <1% of the market, however, it is important to understand its limitations, i.e. it is not equipped to handle issues like pricing discrepancies, tax loopholes, or money laundering. These require action from financial regulators, customs authorities, and industry initiatives. Today, more than ever, we need a fact-based dialogue, that focuses on strengthening the right institutions for the right problems.
