Q: Why should consumers care about variety development? ? A: Variety research is an essential basis for improving the ‘goodness’ of coffee: how good it tastes, how good it is for the planet, and how good it is for people who grow it. The future of coffee starts here. Spread awareness of our work: worldcoffeeresearch.org

Grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihoods of the families who produce it.
关于我们
World Coffee Research (WCR) is a 501 (c)(5) non-profit, collaborative research and development program of the global coffee industry to grow, protect, and enhance supplies of quality coffee while improving the livelihood of the families who produce it. WCR works to create a toolbox of coffee varieties, genetic resources and accompanying technologies and to disseminate them strategically and collaboratively in producing countries to alleviate constraints to the supply chain of high quality coffee. We have research trials and projects underway in 30+ countries, all of which are designed to deliver higher quality coffee, more productive coffee farms, and more sustainable livelihoods for coffee farmers. Most of our research is conducted in the places where coffee is grown. We conduct our work in partnership with leading research institutes, governmental bodies, and coffee organizations from around the world, including the Specialty Coffee Associations of America and Europe (SCAA/SCAE), the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the Coffee Quality Institute (CQI), the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT), Centre de coopération internationale en recherche agronomique pour le développement (CIRAD), Texas A&M University and the Borlag Institute, and among others. To ensure maximum on-the-ground impact, we also partner closely with local research institutions, coffee organizations, governments, NGOs, and the private sector. WCR's American headquarters is in Portland, OR with satellite offices in Marseille, France, and Santa Ana, El Salvador, where we also operate a research farm. WCR is funded through direct contributions from coffee industry stakeholders. Additional funding also comes from foundations, development organizations, and scientific research granting agencies. Member Day 2024 ??? On November 12, members of our team—including Alexa Heinicke, Maeve Holler, Dr. Santos Barrera Lemus, Dr. Tania Humphrey, and Emilia Uma?a—had the pleasure of welcoming representatives from member companies and guests around the globe to Costa Rica for our second annual Member Day. Nearly 50 participants from countries as near and far as Guatemala and Singapore gathered in an immersive, hands-on experience consisting of field visits, tours, and cupping activities—all to connect more deeply with the variety development at the heart of WCR's work. We are so thankful to all who joined us on this learning journey. We hope to welcome you to another research site and origin soon. Read the recap of this year's event here: https://lnkd.in/g3mWi2hD Special thanks to our collaborators SintercafeCR for supporting this event and to our partners at Aquiares Estate Coffee and CATIE Oficial for hosting our members.

Thanks to Agencia Agraria de Noticias - Agraria.pe for featuring our ongoing work in Peru to establish 10 seed lots and support farmers in accessing improved, climate-resilient and disease-resistant varieties. What does it take to build a sustainable coffee supply chain? Cornell University, one of our TSC members, and World Coffee Research (WCR) are leading the Coffee Improvement Program to empower smallholder coffee farmers facing climate challenges and safeguard the global coffee supply chain. The coffee industry contributes $343 billion to the US economy alone and employs 2.2 million Americans. This is why ensuring the resilience of coffee smallholders is crucial for both local economies and global supply chains. With over $5M from USAID, this program aims to tackle key issues facing coffee farmers today: ?? Advanced Breeding Tools: Fast-tracking disease resistance for long-term productivity. ?? Global Breeding Programs: Equipping coffee breeding programs in nine countries with cutting-edge tools and training to respond to climate needs. ?? Seed Systems for Farmers: Ensuring smallholders have access to high-quality seeds and planting material for resilience. What impact do you believe climate resilience will have on coffee’s future? Let us know in the comments ?? Read more here: https://buff.ly/3CHYpL8 #CoffeeIndustry #Sustainability #AgricultureInnovation #ClimateResilience #Cornell #WorldCoffeeResearch

[INTERVIEW] 'New coffee varieties will help poor exporting countries'

Participating in the panel “Cultivating the Future: Climate Resilience in the Coffee Supply Chain” during #COP29 in Baku was an opportunity to reflect once again on the importance of partnerships and the urgency of joint action. The concept of Goal 17 from the 2030 Agenda, highlights the need to move beyond dialogue — still remaining essential though —by evolving public-private collaboration methods to implement tangible and timely solutions. Only through such approaches can we effectively and sustainably address the global challenges facing the #coffee sector. The consequences of climate change on coffee production are dramatic: migration, income losses, and social disruption threaten entire communities. To tackle these issues, science is a fundamental lever. Projects like those led by World Coffee Research and CIRAD (CGIAR) aimed at developing more climate-resilient coffee varieties demonstrate how research can help mitigate both climate and social impacts. At the same time, we must continue advancing agroforestry models and techniques that increase productivity. Producing more within the same area reduces the per-unit impact, creates value for communities, and supports a more equitable future for all, especially as global demand for coffee continues to grow. Finally, it was a privilege to hear Daniela Fatarella of Save the Children Italia, who highlighted that children are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change and socio-political crises, often paying the highest price. Collaboration among global actors, such as Lavazza Group and public and private organizations, remains vital to building a lasting positive impact?for all the stakeholders involved. Thanks to the Ministero degli Affari Esteri e della Cooperazione Internazionale for the invitation to this panel, and to all the speakers for their valuable contributions.
