In Solidarity for A Green World. We have a collective responsibility to reduce the impact of climate change on our planet.? As the close of #COP29 approaches, I’m proud of my work at World Bicycle Relief, which contributes to a greener world and builds resilience among the most vulnerable through bicycle mobility. Climate change exacerbates socioeconomic challenges and the need for resilience. Since 2005, World Bicycle Relief has mobilized over 834,000 individuals with bicycles to access health, economic, and education opportunities.
Cycling can dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and people who cycle daily emit an estimated 84% fewer carbon emissions than those who do not. More than just clean energy, in developing regions of the world, bicycles serve as vital transportation to carry goods, access services, and boost health and well-being.? I ride my bike for joy; it’s an essential transportation tool for others.
Bicycles build resilience and are important household assets. In Alego Usango, Kenya, rural communities are choosing bicycles over motorcycles.? With Buffalo Bicycles, they:
? Gained independence and wellness?
? Decreased by 93% the use of motorized transport?
? Experienced 25 times increase in bicycle trips
? Diversified businesses, growing incomes, and building resilience.??
? Reached scarce water sources (72% of owners)
? Saved 50% on transport expenditure in a month?
? Reported sharing the bicycle (98% of participants), scaling impact, and reducing emissions
World Bicycle Relief partners with governments, international and local organizations, and the private sector to scale proven climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience solutions by increasing access to and use of fit-for-purpose bicycles.
