We aren't sure whether this piece of news celebrates the ongoing spread of bamboo throughout the world or if it is even worthy of announcement, but the news that the LEGO Group has launched a lucky #bamboo in their "Botanicals" line seemed something we couldn't just ignore. Coming soon to a toy department near you. (Note: Close examination has revealed the product contains no natural bamboo. Indeed, lucky bamboo isn't even bamboo, so there's that little bit of weird, too.) #luckybamboo #lego #toys #marketing https://lnkd.in/gqgbH5ur Fred Hornaday Akash Chandra Swarnendu Sarkar Vine Wang

关于我们
PLEASE JOIN OUR GROUP FORUM The World Bamboo Organization is a diverse group consisting of individual people, commercial businesses, non-profit associations, institutions, and allied trade corporations that all share a common interest = BAMBOO. The purpose of the WBO is to improve and promote this common interest, as well as the conditions affecting, and the industry surrounding, this common interest. We are dedicated to promoting the use of bamboo and bamboo products for the sake of the environment and economy. We are a United States tax-exempt trade association (U.S. 501-c6, est. 2005) formed to facilitate the exchange of information from around the world on the environmental, socioeconomic, biological, and cultural aspects of bamboo. By bringing together local and regional bamboo people and creating mechanisms for global communications, the WBO’s goal is to facilitate the development of new partnerships and alliances to advance the causes of bamboo and furthering the efforts of bamboo practitioners worldwide. We play a crucial networking role by connecting people for useful collaborations on all things related to bamboo. Originally founded as the International Bamboo Association (IBA), the idea for an international coordinating body for bamboo practitioners was born out of discussions at the 1991 International Bamboo Workshop in Chiangmai, Thailand.

Well, it's official!! The #Philippines has set a new #GuinnessWorldRecord for simultaneous #bamboo planting! They set the goal, spread the word, shared the joy, and broke the record! A fantastic 2,305 planters showed up at 19 locations across mainland Mindanao and Leyte province responding to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) initiative. The purpose was to highlight bamboo's role in promoting a #circulareconomy, #climateresilience, and #sustainabledevelopment. One of the outcomes, aside from the amazing number of new bamboo plantings, is the call to lawmakers from DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. to create policies supporting a circular economy framework, using bamboo as a key example. "We must love our #environment as much as we love our children, ensuring they live in a healthy, peaceful, and stable place," Solidum said. Turn your eyes toward #Philippines' North Mindanao Island on Friday, October 18th when an estimated 5,500 enthusiasts will stretch out across the country to #plantbamboo. The Kawayanihan initiative hopes to create a #worldrecord for the most people planting bamboo at the same time. In September, on #WorldBambooDay, the community created a simulation of the project to raise awareness of the initiative and spark interest. Now they are ready to pick up their plants and head out to approved areas and get them into the ground,. The project will promote #sustainability while building enthusiasm about bamboo's #economic potential in the region. It is supported by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) 10. The planting project is part of the broader Kawayanihan Initiative. The initiative was developed to build on the benefits bamboo provides for the creation of a #circulareconomy, the development of #climateresilience, and the ongoing efforts toward building and maintaining sustainability goals. Of course, once the record is set, the race to beat it will be on! Will your community want to get into gear and see if you can topple the World Record holders? Let us know if you plan to make the attempt! (Photo from the September Bamboo Planting simulation) Braja Narayan Mohanty Clare N. A #BambooWorkshop is coming to #Florida in January, 2025, to celebrate the publication of Bamboo Architecture Unboxed, by Jorg Stamm and Munir Vahanvati! Join the authors at the Tropical Bamboo Nursery & Gardens in Loxahatchee, Florida from January 18th through the 25th, 2025, for one of bamboo’s most engaging events and to celebrate their new book. Developed as hands-on construction events, international Bamboo Workshops have inspired hundreds of participants around the world. Eager to learn techniques developed by experts, participants take home not only their enthusiasm for bamboo, but also the skills and knowledge needed to build their ideas into something real. Participants always leave Bamboo Workshops inspired and this one will be extraordinary! Workshop leader and bamboo expert, Jorg Stamm came to bamboo through training in traditional German #carpentry and technology. For the past thirty years, he has lived in Columbia where his carpentry knowledge enhanced his work with the giant timber bamboo, Guadua Angustifolia. While working in Bali with John Hardy and Linda Garland in the early 2000s, Jorg’s South American knowledge met with Balinese practices. The result is a hybrid of knowledge and skills that continues to impact bamboo construction around the world. ? Munir Vahanvati came to work with bamboo through his training as an architect. Following graduation, India’s National Institute of Design offered an opportunity to collaborate with traditional bamboo craftsmen in Northeast India. That experience, exploring traditional techniques while sharing contemporary design principles, set Munir’s career path which has focused on empowering communities to embrace #sustainability by engaging them in hands-on learning, inspiring them with good #design, and building their relationship with the natural materials around them. Munir is a co-founder and Design Director of the Melbourne based Giant Grass design studio. He serves as a World Bamboo Ambassador. #Climatechange is easy to ignore when its personal impacts are so minimal we still believe reusable shopping bags make a difference. But greater percentages of the world's population are experiencing climate impacts personally as weather events unimaginable ten years ago suddenly impact their homes, families, livelihoods, neighborhoods, and access to health, food, and shelter. Suddenly, #extremeweather events – rain, hurricanes, flooding, extreme snow events, avalanches, wildfires, power outages, or drought, to name some recent ones – while still hard to imagine, must be considered possibilities, even in places they have never previously been experienced by humans. In July 2018, torrential rains and consequent flooding hit #Japan, destroying close to 7,000 homes, killing 237 people and injuring over four hundred others. The most devastation occurred in the Mabi town area of the Kurashiki city region where the deluge connected two adjacent rivers and flooded the entire area. The impact of subsequent earthquakes in the region raised damage costs to US $9.86 billion, a figure that doesn't factor in healthcare costs accrued by those injured in the events. Out of the devastation arose the Mabi recovery project designed to address weaknesses in a system built before extreme climate change required consideration. Improvements have increased flow in existing rivers thereby ensuring adjacent river systems remain separate during extreme weather events, widening #levees, and increasing the speed with which #drainagesystems are able to clear overflow. Each enhancement was designed to improve the area’s ability to manage extreme weather situations at a local level, thereby protecting lives, livelihoods, and infrastructure. One element of the recovery project addresses and honours the reality that the extreme flooding event of 2018 has already changed the community and those whose lives were affected by it. The Mabi Reconstruction Disaster Prevention Park in Kurashiki City is built where a levee fell during the torrential onslaught, an event that exacerbated the extensive trauma faced by the region and its inhabitants as unconstrained storm waters swept through the city. Bamboo Gate, designed by KENGO KUMA & ASSOCIATES and created with input from the local community, visually links the water of the Oda river with the mountains through a dramatic archway the distinguishing space designed for gathering from space designed for emergency storage. The undulating design exploits the flexibility of #bamboo, laid throughout in cascading waves that seem to lap over one another. It is a reminder of its conceptual birth in the waters that have now receded, the memories of which will outlast a generation. All photos @Kawasumi-Kobayashi Kenji Photograph Office. There are some very good lessons here for everyone to read. In promoting #bamboo cultivation and utilization, often you see over-eager acceptance of bamboo products that actually are not as sustainable or as eco-friendly as they claim to be. Take note! Thank you, World Bamboo Ambassador Rebecca Reubens, PhD, for raising understanding about the challenges encountered by designers who work with bamboo when negotiating the sale of their pieces, often pressured to reduce prices because it's "just" bamboo. As you've noted, #bamboo has beauty, resilience, and strength equal to what wood can offer in a variety of applications. Raising the bar by challenging consumers to evaluate an item's #value due to its design and craftsmanship is an important way to draw attention to bamboo and validate its presence on the global stage. That Design Mumbai, India's first international #design show, chose to feature your #furniture pieces on the cover of its brochure is evidence that the world is ready to take notice! Congratulations on that awesome placement! Katiane Fátima de Gouvêa ???????? Recently, one of the bamboo groups I’m on was discussing how bamboo products made by craft groups were becoming more and more overpriced. This is a recurrent theme in the bamboo community, where a lot of folks feel that products made by ‘poor’ producers ought not be ‘expensive’. I’ve never heard this discussion around a material like wood. People understand that the value of a product crafted from any given material comes from many things including it’s making, design, positioning etc. Not so with bamboo, where people say to us, ‘why it is so expensive? It’s JUST bamboo’. The hope for me as an entrepreneur, a designer and an ambassador for the World Bamboo Organization is for bamboo to be mainstreamed enough for people to accept it deserves a stratified market. You have a low-cost wood product and a luxury one co-existing side by side with no debate or raised eyebrows, or a low-cost food stall and a gourmet food restaurant coexisting. This needs to become the reality for bamboo. Against this backdrop, we’re taking bamboo to Design Mumbai- India’s first international design show. It was heartening to see Design Boom’s story on this featuring our bamboo chairs as the opening image. The bamboo pieces we are taking are artisanal, luxury, and finely crafted. Catch us and these beauties at Design Mumbai from November 6-9. Susanne Lucas michel Abadie Komal Sharma

The US Secretary of State’s twenty-fifth annual Awards for #CorporateExcellence were announced yesterday. The World Bamboo Organization congratulates RIZOME BAMBOO Philippines, one of six recipients, which accepted the award for #Climate #Resilience. We also congratulate David Sands, Rizome’s Founder, and Chief Product Officer. Mr. Sands also serves as a Rizome Director and is a World Bamboo Ambassador. It is Rizome’s pioneering work in the #construction industry that has led to its recognition by the Secretary of State in the field of climate resilience. With innovative technologies, the company, using fast-growing bamboo, has developed engineered alternatives to high-carbon-footprint #construction materials such as concrete and steel. Rizome provides bamboo slats, veneers, panels, laminated veneer lumber and laminated strand lumber to the construction industry.? Ambassador Jose Manuel G. Romualdez of #Philippines was at the ceremony and congratulated Mr. Sands for taking the lead in climate resilience. In The Philippines, bamboo’s resilience, durability, and flexibility have made it a national symbol for the Filipino spirit of resilience and thus provides this year’s award a dual significance for the country and the company.
