Sparking Bold Thoughts

关于我们

The World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh is an independent, nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting a deeper understanding of key international issues that affect our community and world. In 2023, our focus issues include Global Migration, Women and Girls, and Climate Action, with the overarching themes of truth and compassion. Established in 1931, our programming is designed to foster global mindedness and global connectivity in Pittsburgh. Our approach is centered around creating inclusive and accessible experiences that generate transformed leadership for youth, business and community leaders, and educators – and a greater sense of belonging for all. For this vision of the future to become a reality, the Council works to create and execute diverse, bold, and engaging programming throughout the Western Pennsylvania region. We work hard to ensure that meaningful, action-oriented global learning opportunities are at the heart of our work and that our programs reflect the great diversity of our world across generations.

Last week, our educator cohort celebrated their completion of the 4-part “Global Learning for a Local Workforce” professional development series! At the final showcase, teams from Bentworth, California Area, Charleroi Area, Connellsville Area, & Laurel Highlands School Districts presented their final concepts to bring career-connected global learning to their schools and networked with regional partners. ?? Designed in partnership with the Consortium for Public Education, “Global Learning for a Local Workforce” offered educators from Washington and Fayette Counties an immersive opportunity to explore the local "educonomy," bring a global perspective into their schools, and gain the skills and insights to prepare students for the 21st century workforce! ?? We’re grateful to the educators who participated in the program! We’d also like to give a special thank you to PennWest California for hosting our final showcase and the many local employers and organizations that were a part of this important professional development opportunity. “Global Learning for a Local Workforce” will be back next year—stay tuned for updates.

  • Last month was full of incredible milestones for our Youth team! ??First up, we’d like to congratulate Morgan, Eva, Kenza and Natalia for successfully leading a dynamic presentation and simulation with members of the Civic Learning Ecosystem on the importance of youth-adult partnerships that build intergenerational trust, respect & collaboration to transform communities. ????A special shout-out to Zane A., recently recognized for his role in revitalizing the City’s Youth Commission! Zane and his fellow students presented the Youth Commission Recommendation Report — a proposal offering their vision and key recommendations for the future direction of the City’s Youth Commission. ??Our Global Minds Chapter Meetup was a success! We welcomed 57 students and 5 adult allies at the Carnegie Museums, where they explored the museum on a guided Culture tour, formed intercultural friendships, and brainstormed ways to grow their Global Minds chapters together. Check out the photos and get inspired by the Youth Team's incredible work! Way to go!

  • We were thrilled to advance into our third session of “Global Learning for a Local Workforce”! This session featured insightful contributions from the Allegheny Conference, Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board, Fayette Chamber of Commerce, and Fayette Business Education Partnership. Educators explored essential employability skills, talent pipelines, and regional trends to better understand our local workforce and landscape. They also had the chance to hear directly from regional business leaders across sectors, including tourism, entertainment, higher education, manufacturing, and technology, with speakers from @Oglebay Resort, The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, PennWest California, Washington & Jefferson College, Catalyst Connection, and TSI Touch. Up next, we’re excited to showcase the cohort’s concepts for bringing career-connected global learning opportunities to their schools as they get ready to complete this professional development opportunity next week!
