#Science for #Human #Security New Carbon Economy United Nations International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development (IDSSD) New Carbon Economy Consortium (NCEC) has partnered with the World Academy of Art and Science to showcase world leading scientists and #innovators, on topics ranging from #critical #minerals to #NetZero fuels to direct air capture #DAC technologies - and the policy approach that could solve the #climate #crisis! - see full recording below The first of four posts featuring each of the amazing speakers follows: “Treat CO2 as waste and require those who create it to permanently dispose of it.” Love this! Klaus S. Lackner: “father of Direct Air Capture”, brilliant physicist and professor at the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment of the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University. Exciting to see Klaus’ passive direct air capture “mechanical tree” up and working on Arizona State University campus! No energy required to pull CO2 out of the air - just vectors and solvents. Klaus’ key insights that really resonated for me: -a growing world needs more energy -at still some 80pc of the global energy mix fossil fuel phase out won’t happen overnight, but seeing how fast fracking has escalated since 2003 renewables could similarly accelerate, with liquid fuels stored for months -the escalating impacts of more CO2 in the atmosphere are more and more costly in both $ and human terms, SO let’s focus on sustainable realism. -treating GHG emissions as a waste management problem with the producer responsible for “putting away”/ sequestering could be a simple solution to what has become an increasingly serious problem.
