Recent findings from a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) study showed no clear evidence that deaf or hard of hearing commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers face higher crash risks. With proper training adaptations, these drivers can be just as safe and effective as others on the road. WorkSTEPS Chief Medical Officer, Ben Hoffman MD MPH, thinks this is a big win for hearing-impaired CMV drivers and a step forward for inclusive road safety policies. "There has been a long-standing controversy over whether hearing impaired commercial drivers present an undo safety risk for motor vehicle crashes. During my time on the FMCSA Medical Board, this issue was often discussed. My former boss, the legendary Jim Schultz—who lead safety at the Federal Railroad Administration—always believed that hearing-impaired drivers did not pose a threat to road safety. Like so many lessons Jim taught me, he was right." #roadsafety #FMCSA Read the findings here: https://okt.to/BzjkEQ
