We thank Amanda Latimore, PhD, who led September's Grand Rounds on the topic of "Opioid Use Disorder in Rural and Urban Populations: Addressing Health Disparities in the Context of Telemedicine." Dr. Latimore is a social epidemiologist. She is the Director of the Center for Addiction Research and Effective Solutions (CARES), which engages communities and translates research into action in order to prevent addiction and to address the needs of those impacted by addiction. Dr. Latimore's research has focused on social determinants of health and how they contribute to racial inequalities in healthcare. She has worked closely with the Baltimore City Health Department, as a policy consultant for the American Society of Addiction Medicine - ASAM, and serves as an adjunct assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and at Georgetown University. Substance use is a matter of public health. As cannabis regulations continue to evolve, it's important to take a close look at how these changes impact people's consumption. When Workit Health began providing virtual care in 2015, most people we talked to hadn't even heard of telehealth. When we started treating opioid use disorder online in 2017 (after an initial in-person appointment, at that time), we were called on to continuously assure prospective members and other organizations that telehealth treatment was legitimate and legal. Now telehealth has become a critical component of healthcare in America, but many are still unsure of what is possible via virtual care. Workit Health co-signed a letter to?Congress?and the?White House, adding our voice to the hundreds of other stakeholders asking them to ensure ongoing access to telehealth prescribing of controlled substances. As we await regulations from the Drug Enforcement Administration, we are dismayed by reports that they plan to significantly limit virtual prescribing. We join the?American Telemedicine Association,?ATA Action, and our fellow providers and healthcare organizations in calling for Congress and the White House to extend pandemic-era remote prescribing flexibilities for controlled substances for two years. Many Workit Health members rely on the Schedule III controlled substance buprenorphine to treat their opioid use disorder and maintain their quality of life.
