“People are afraid of hiring people with disabilities because of a fear of the unknown,” says Emily M. Dickens, chief of staff and head of public affairs at SHRM. But maybe they should be thinking, “How can we make it a better place for people to come visit – and stay?” Justin Mazorlig, owner of Common Corners Brewery in Walnut, Calif., admits in this clip he had some of that fear of the unknown. But now he thinks differently. Like some other rural economies, Liberal, Kan., is battling to reverse a brain drain. Most students tell Mayor Jose Lara they want to leave town in pursuit of opportunity after they graduate – but he and other officials are making moves to change that. https://lnkd.in/e66FAfnc “Sometimes I’ll ask the 10% that didn’t raise their hand, ‘Why do you want to stay?’” he says. “Those are always more interesting answers. The ones who want to stay always say that they want to make the community better and then we can always flourish a conversation around them. We should always be looking at, ‘What would it take for me to want to stay?’” To get more of the local population to remain in the Latino/Hispanic-majority town of about 20,000, built on the energy and farming industries, officials are working within a focused vision to attract new green jobs and energy jobs in partnership a major company, building training resources with the local community college, improving access to capital, and building up access to broadband. Latinos and Latinas represent a tiny sliver of venture capitalists, far below their presence in the U.S. population. Ramona Schindelheim talks to Dr. Mariela Salas, executive director of SomosVC, a nonprofit focused on elevating more of them within the venture capital industry, on the latest Work in Progress: A WorkingNation Podcast. “There are various factors that are leading to us being underrepresented within the ecosystem,” she says. “There are cultural barriers, socioeconomic barriers, lack of access, and lack of opportunity.” Read more about it and listen to the podcast at https://lnkd.in/e47cGPBb - or listen and subscribe to the podcast on YouTube at https://lnkd.in/ePtDfJks, where episodes debut at 1 p.m. ET (10 a.m. PT) on Mondays. #WorkInProgress #Latinos #Latinas #HispanicHeritageMonth #podcast #VentureCapital #VentureCapitalists
