Putting every student on a college tract is nothing more than the intentional failure to prepare students for the workforce during high school. It's by design, as a method of reoccurring revenue for the educational machine. Prior to the 1980s only a small percentage of people were put on a college tract (those pursuing professional endeavors such as doctor, lawyer, engineer, etc).
We need to get back to that model, as well as increase apprenticeships across all industries (not just the skilled trades) and actually prepare people for a career that interests them.
As a parent you need to introduce your child to various career paths at an early age. Those who show interest in the skilled trades should be given the opportunity to explore pre-apprenticeship programs, apprenticeships, trade schools and other workforce development approaches that don't require college.
Most likely educators aren't going to present these options to your kids, so it's up to you to help them find a career they are passionate about and the pathway to it. Bring Back the Trades, Inc was formed to help in that effort.
Bring Back the Trades, Inc is a non-profit skilled trades advocacy group that offers resources, mentoring, scholarships and career fairs. Learn more at bringbackthetrades.org
