The Pierce County Workforce Development Board met for their bi-monthly meeting on Thursday afternoon. During this meeting, they discussed our recent WorkSource recertification process, reviewed center highlights and took a deeper dive into the challenges women face in the workplace. The Board is a business-led council comprised of community leaders with expertise in the public, private, and philanthropic sectors. They volunteer their time to lead and shape our work in strengthening the Pierce County workforce system.

We have many resources available to federal civil servants to help them as they navigate rejoining our local workforce. There are training and education opportunities to reskill and/or upskill into new roles that they may be eligible for.

We saw a $1.79 return for every $1 spent through Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Title 1 programs statewide this last program year. This includes nearly $83 million in benefits savings from job seekers moving off public assistance programs after finding quality jobs. By focusing on addressing economic disparities, removing employment barriers, and ensuring accountability, we, as your local workforce board and boards across the state, use WIOA funds to support the design and implementation of initiatives that maximize economic opportunity for all Washingtonians while filling the workforce pipeline for employers. Funding through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) is vital to our local workforce system. Federal WIOA Title 1-B funds support both job seekers and businesses through education, training, and other supportive services. In the 2023-2024 program year, more than 6,800 businesses and 13,000 job seekers statewide received services through WIOA funds. As we learn more about the number of civil servants in Pierce County impacted by the federal layoffs, we are actively collaborating with other Local Workforce Development Boards to provide essential resources and information for those affected. A series of statewide Rapid Response sessions are in the works, and we continue to provide our regular monthly Layoff Assistance Sessions through our WorkSource Pierce system.

As Pierce County's Local WorkForce Board, we are working with agencies and other local boards across the state to consolidate the resources available for federal workers facing unemployment to support this upcoming state-wide rapid response session.
