    Are You Avoiding Your Numbers? Here’s Why That’s Costing You More Than You Think Many entrepreneurs avoid looking at their numbers—whether it’s fear, overwhelm, or simply not making time. But ignoring your financials isn’t just a headache—it’s costing you money. I recently spoke with Cheryl Heller, a fractional CFO, about the biggest financial mistakes business owners make. Here’s what she shared—and how you can fix it. 1. Stop Guessing Your Pricing Too many businesses set prices based on competitors instead of real costs. If it costs you $100 to produce a product, but you’re selling it for $100, you’re not making money. Instead, price based on: ? Your costs – Materials, labor, overhead ? Your margins – What’s required to be profitable ? Your value – Why customers choose you over others Your pricing should be a strategy, not a guess. 2. Your Bank Account Balance Isn’t Your Cash Flow Many business owners gauge financial health by their bank balance. But profit and cash flow aren’t the same. If clients take 60+ days to pay, your business can still struggle—even with strong revenue. Fix this by: ?? Tracking days sales outstanding (DSO) – Know your average payment time ?? Offering early payment incentives – Discounts for paying in 10-15 days ?? Following up on overdue invoices – Ensure payments don’t slip through Cash flow issues can sink a business—don’t let it be yours. 3. You’re Probably Wasting Money Without Realizing It Recurring charges—software, tools, and subscriptions—add up fast. A quarterly expense audit can help: ?? Review every charge ?? Cancel anything that isn’t necessary ?? Reallocate funds to growth-driving activities Eliminating waste improves profit margins instantly. 4. If You Only Look at Your Numbers During Tax Season, You’re Flying Blind Your CPA handles compliance, but you need real-time insights to make smart business decisions. ?? Schedule a monthly finance check-in: Compare forecast vs. actual revenue – Are you hitting goals? Review expenses – Cut what’s unnecessary. Track profit vs. cash flow – Are you truly making money? Even 30 minutes a month can uncover opportunities to optimize. 5. You Shouldn’t Be Managing Your Books Alone If you’re personally handling invoicing, reconciling accounts, or tracking payments, it’s time to delegate. A financial assistant or CFO can: ?
