Career Move…Right Into Imposter Syndrome Just under two years ago, I faced a career decision: step into a CEO role. When I was first asked, my immediate response was: “No way. I’m a good lieutenant, but I am not a CEO.” But over the next 24 hours, I kept thinking—what makes a good CEO? A good leader? Someone I would want to follow? I came to some conclusions about myself that helped me move forward: ? I love work—the actual work of work. That’s what gets me out of bed. ? I love helping people see more in themselves, building teams! ? I love bringing teams together around experience management. With that in mind, stepping into the CEO role seemed like a opportunity to stretch and grow who I wanted to be, scary as heck. I kept coming back to what I have built my career upon, Experience Management (XM) can change a company with a focus on: The team. The customer. The product. The brand experience. That’s what makes great teams, companies, and leadership. So, I said YES. This wasn’t a healthy, profitable business I was going to be leading—it was going to be a hard slog to turn the ship around. But at the end of the day, it was just ‘the work of work.’ It took me about six months to shake off the imposter syndrome—to realize that being a CEO isn’t reserved for famous leaders we all know. You Belong. Period. When asked about imposter syndrome, America Ferrera challenged the term itself, saying: “It’s not my fault that I feel like I don’t belong. Everything in my life has told me I don’t.” That really stuck with me. So many of us have been made to feel like we don’t belong in certain careers, industries, or positions. No wonder we struggle with imposter syndrome—it’s not just self-doubt; it’s the result of a system that was never built with us in mind. So what now? We embrace it. We own it. We show up anyway.
