This is what we came to Baku to do—put our science on the agenda and into the hands of decision makers at the highest levels to shape a better climate future. We will share further analysis of the final outcomes of COP29 in coming days and weeks. And we know that the end of one COP is simply the beginning of another. Already, our sights are set on the road to COP30. Here are two key accomplishments from the second and final week of COP29: ?? In partnership with the Environmental and Energy Study Institute, we put the growing challenge of carbon pollution from wildfires on the official program with the only side event on the topic. We highlighted the latest science which suggests that the next round of national climate commitments—due to the UN in February, 2025—needs to be even more ambitious. ??Brazil, the host of next year’s COP, was one of the first to release their new climate pledge. Woodwell Climate scientists provided significant consultation on the plan, which prominently features ecosystem conservation, climate justice, and sustainable development, as well as science-based decision making and a new Tropical Forests Forever Fund to finance forest protection. #ClimateScienceforChange #ClimateCOP #COP29

At Woodwell Climate, we're always striving to communicate more effectively with you, our valued community. To help us in this effort, we’re conducting a short survey and would love your feedback. The survey will only take about 5-7 minutes of your time and will allow us to better refine our messaging, improve the materials we share, and ensure we’re delivering meaningful, accessible information. Your responses will remain confidential, and will help us better understand how to communicate our work on climate solutions needed to propel us toward a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable world. If you complete the survey, you can choose to be entered into a prize drawing—five lucky winners will win a choice of Woodwell Climate merchandise. https://lnkd.in/eZkvp3np

Gwichyaa Zhee Gwich'in, Gwich'in Council International Co-Chair, Arctic educator, leader, and writer
It's critical that the global circumpolar wildland fire crisis and the accompanying permafrost/yedoma thaw be included in the 7th assessment cycle (AR7) of the IPCC. The disturbances in the north cannot be ignored, and Gwich'in Council International has worked diligently to make sure that our communities are heard, and the impacts are understood. We were proud to join Woodwell CRC in Baku at this official COP 29 side-event to do just that.
Woodwell Climate and the Environmental and Energy Study Institute co-hosted the only official COP29 Side Event on wildfire emissions. Together, we presented the latest science behind Arctic wildfires and wildfire-permafrost interactions that are accelerating the release of greenhouse gas emissions. We focused on how these wildfire-related emissions affect the carbon budget and how wildfire mitigation efforts may help achieve the Paris Agreement goals. #ClimateScienceforChange #COP29 #ClimateCOP Jennifer Watts

Every opportunity to increase investments in the brilliance and resilient solutions of Indigenous Peoples creates boundless impact on planetary health. The Rockefeller Foundation is making a #BigBet on our pathfinding approach beside Pawanka Fund, Woodwell Climate Research Center, WildMon and our ecosystem of partners who are catalyzing and diversifying investment into community-designed solutions for climate and biodiversity. Jonathan Jennings and I are particularly thankful for the advising and support from Alexander Bashian over the past year! We hope to see you all at #COP30 for more exciting announcements. Major thanks to our partners at Earth Finance, Inc., Garrett Kephart and Reuven Carlyle, If Not Us Then Who?, Paul Redman and David Hernández-Palmar, The Ministry of Health in Indonesia, Budi Sadikin, Silverback Earth and ??Moises Uribe ?? and Nicolas Mongardini, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and Stephen Cornish, Savimbo, and FSC Indigenous Foundation, Steve Kusmer, Sonila Cook, and Kevin Currey!
Today, I am pleased to announce The Rockefeller Foundation’s $500,000 grant to Health In Harmony (HIH), a global climate nonprofit that collaborates with Indigenous Peoples and local communities to scale investments and implement their environmental solutions. Indigenous Peoples are the frontline guardians of the planet’s most critical ecosystems, yet they receive less than 1% of global climate finance. Starting in 2025, this funding will support efforts in Indonesia, Panama, Brazil, Madagascar, and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), catalyzing private sector investments toward climate mitigation, adaptation, and resilience This initiative is part of The Rockefeller Foundation's commitment to investing in nature to help protect and preserve ecosystems while accelerating a green transition that prioritizes people and communities.
