    Is "fauxductivity" affecting your workplace? Recent research suggests it might be more common than we think. ?? Defined as employees faking productivity, fauxductivity is particularly prevalent in remote and hybrid settings. Human Resource Executive reports that a recent study by Workhuman found that while two-thirds of employees deny it, nearly half of managers see it as an issue. However, the root cause isn't remote work itself, but poor workplace culture and burnout. According to MyPerfectResume, 88% of U.S.-based workers report experiencing burnout, leading many to fauxductivity as a coping mechanism. Jasmine Escalera, a career expert at MyPerfectResume, explains, "Fauxductivity may provide employees a much-needed mental break without stepping away from work entirely." To combat this, HR leaders need to promote well-being and work-life balance. This includes setting clear work-hour boundaries, discouraging after-hours communication, supporting work breaks, and offering flexible schedules. Encouraging open dialogue about workloads and stress can also help address issues before they lead to burnout. By fostering a wellness-focused culture and aligning work with personal development goals, organizations can drive genuine productivity and reduce the need for fauxductivity.     Pay transparency is becoming the norm for many U.S. employers, driven by new legislation and evolving organizational values. ?? HR Brew reports that recent surveys indicate that three-quarters of organizations are sharing pay rates or ranges with external candidates, and 69% are doing so with internal candidates. However, transparency is just the beginning. Employers are now focusing on pay equity too, with many developing strategies and budgeting for raises to address compensation gaps. As Jack Jones from Mercer highlights, "When you have to open up your processes and show people what you’re doing, it’s really important that you’re confident in what you’re actually doing." Over half of the organizations surveyed by Mercer are proactively conducting pay equity studies and making necessary pay adjustments. This proactive approach not only helps avoid potential litigation but also enhances overall HR strategy and employee engagement.     U.S. employers are on the brink of facing "the largest labor shortage the country has ever seen," according to a recent Lightcast report. ?? ?? HR Dive writes that there are several factors contributing to this looming crisis: - the retirement of Baby Boomers - declining birth rates - younger generations favoring office jobs - a shrinking number of working-age adults Notably, women are earning degrees at record rates but still occupy less than 2% of roles in traditionally male-dominated fields like plumbing and HVAC, which are experiencing critical shortages. Lightcast emphasizes that employers must adapt by broadening their hiring criteria and focusing on training new hires. "The best way to make sure a worker has the skills they need for a job is to teach them those skills," the report states. Additionally, offering flexible work options, such as childcare support, can give employers a competitive edge in attracting talent.     The momentum of pay transparency legislation continues to build, and we're all for it! ?? As of October 1, 2024, Maryland will be enforcing two significant laws: the Pay Transparency Law and the Pay Stub and Pay Statement Law. Forbes reports that the Pay Transparency Law mandates employers to disclose wage ranges and benefits in all job postings, enhancing pay equity. This applies to jobs performed, even partially, in Maryland. Employers must provide a good faith pay range and a general description of benefits, including bonuses and stock options. The Pay Stub and Pay Statement Law requires employers to issue detailed pay statements each payday, ensuring transparency. This includes information such as pay rates, hours worked, and detailed deductions. Employers should review job postings, update payroll systems, and train staff to comply with these new regulations.
