Fall is the perfect time to talk about #onions with planting season in full swing and seedlings soon to pop out of the ground! Did you know there are over 40,000 acres of onions grown in #California? Let's take a moment to refresh ourselves with some common diseases that show up in the field. Pink Root: - infected roots turn pink/red - roots continue to get darker and eventually decay - plant growth will be stunted Onion Yellow Dwarf - yellow streaks at base - all developing leaves start to yellow and droop - reduced bulb size Southern Blight - outer leaves wilt and turn yellow - bulb and base of leaves starts to rot - white mycelium on bulbs and in soil If you find yourself wondering what is going on in your onion fields this season, Wonderful Laboratories is open to outside customers for both #nutrient analysis and #pathogen detection.

Do you know about the importance of Magnesium? Magnesium is the center of the chlorophyll molecule in plant tissue. It helps to activate enzymes responsible for the plants metabolism. If there is a shortage of magnesium, chlorophyll will also decrease, resulting in stunted plant growth. Magnesium is available through soil, in the form of the magnesium ion Mg2+. Watch out for deficiencies where you have acidic soils, especially where the pH is less than 5.5. Sandy soils are a watch out for deficiencies as well. If you saw some of these symptoms in the season, you may want to keep an eye on your tissue and soil results for low Mg: ?? Marginal leaf curl ?? Older leaves with interveinal chlorosis ?? "Christmas Tree" green area along the mid-rib while the leaves are yellow on the margins.

Over 40,000 acres of Spinach is grown in California! More than 40% of the country's vegetables and about three-quarters of the country’s fruits and nuts come from California #agriculture! Spinach is just one of the many #commodities produced in the West. Here are a few common spinach diseases we test for here at Wonderful Laboratories and their corresponding symptoms. Bacterial Leaf Spot - irregular shaped spots appear on leaves - spots expand and develop angular shape - spots turn dark brown Stemphylium Leaf Spot - small, circular, gray spots - spots change to tan color - start to dry up and become a papery texture Dampening-Off and Root Rot - poor seed germination/death of seedlings - stunted plants with poor growth - yellowing lower leaves and darkening roots If you want to confirm diseases with a lab test, please reach out at (661) 203-9855

Today we spotlight Dulce Zamora, our lab supervisor in the Agricultural Chemistry Division. Dulce has been with Wonderful Laboratories for seven years now. She has a background in #agriculture, with previous experience with various crops including grapes, nut trees, and onions. Dulce has made great progress in her career, working her way up to lab supervisor. Over the years she has gained valuable skills in both chemistry and leadership. Dulce’s favorite part about her job is that she is constantly learning new things. She especially enjoys trouble shooting new technology and problem solving with the instruments used in the lab. She is proud of how far the lab has come and grateful to be able to use her skills to #support her team. Outside of work, Dulce has a love for animals, especially her two cats and turtle. In her free time, she enjoys video games, and cooking for family and friends. Thank you, Dulce! We appreciate all of your hard work and #dedication to the lab!

Thank you to everyone for another successful CAPCA Conference! If you didn't get a chance to see the Metal American Flag at our booth, we have a photo of it here, after the drawing. The flag was designed and built by McCade Flanagan, a local Bakersfield #FFA Student for his Ag Mechanics Project. McCade did a great job welding it together, painting it, and creating a beautiful, eye catching piece! Our very own Field Rep, Allie Cushnyr, spoke at the conference on Tuesday morning. She gave a presentation on "Ensuring Correct Disease Identification when Managing Field Pests". The #goal of the presentation was to get back to the basics on critically thinking through what could be causing symptoms in the field, where to take samples from, and getting them to the lab. We love helping the #agriculture industry with nutrient analysis, disease testing, and pesticide residues. California Association of Pest Control Advisers (CAPCA) did a great job bringing everyone together and we look forward to seeing you again in Reno next year!
