Honoring servicewomen, preserving their stories and inspiring future generations.

关于我们

The Military Women's Memorial, located at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, is a living memorial. We are dedicated to honoring and remembering the service of our military women, telling their individual stories and collective history to the public, in order to help empower the future generations. Dedicated on Oct. 18, 1997, the Memorial houses an exhibit gallery chronicling the history of women’s service, a theater, Hall of Honor, conference room, gift shop and an outdoor terrace and Court of Valor. The heart of the Memorial is the Register, an interactive database that includes the name, picture, service history and awards of nearly 245,000 past and present servicewomen.

CELEBRATING 27 YEARS OF THE MILITARY WOMEN'S MEMORIAL THE MAKING OF THE MEMORIAL, PART 2 After site selection was complete and Arlington National Cemetery’s original main gate structure with its granite retaining wall was chosen, a two-stage national design competition was held in 1989, and a panel of women veterans and distinguished architects and designers judged more than 130 designs with basic criteria for consideration prescribed by the National Capital Memorial Advisory Commission. In November 1989, the Foundation announced the winner — a team led by New York architects Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, whose mother was a World War II Army nurse. The Weiss/Manfredi design originally included tall glass spires rising from the original semicircular retaining wall’s upper terrace and which would glow softly in the night. This design was ultimately altered because of concerns that the illuminated spires would have too great an impact on the historic memorial corridor and did not blend harmoniously with the neoclassical architecture of the existing structure. They went back to the drawing board and returned with an arc of glass tablets etched with quotations by and about military women, which would act as skylights running the entire length of the exhibit gallery. As the sun passed overhead, the quotations were to reflect down onto the gallery walls inside the Memorial. #mwm27years #HerMemorial #militarywomen #HonorEducateEmpowerRemember

It is a privilege to announce Kerry Washington as our 2024 Patriot Leadership Award Recipient. Kerry Washington is recognized for her role as the Commanding Officer, United States Army Major Charity Adams-Earley during World War Two in Tyler Perry’s new film, The Six Triple Eight. The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion contributed to the war effort in a unique way: by sorting through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail and delivering the mail to American soldiers far from home. In the face of discrimination and a vast, unfamiliar country divided by global conflict, these 855 women brought hope to the front lines. “No mail, low morale” was the motto they gave themselves, and they fulfilled the promise of delivered mail (17 million pieces of it!) and morale when the United States needed it most. During filming of The Six Triple Eight, Washington said, ““I felt like these women were with us in this process. You felt their spirit all the time.” In recent years, due to the efforts of many individuals like Kerry, the story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion is finally being told. In 2022, the 6888th was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. We extend our sincere gratitude to Kerry Washington for bringing the story of the 6888 to America and the world through her powerful and moving portrayal of Major Charity Adams-Earley in "The Six Triple Eight." Watch Trailer - https://lnkd.in/gH7FRgrq ABOUT KERRY WASHINGTON Kerry Washington is an Emmy-winning, SAG, and Golden Globe-nominated actor, bestselling author, director, producer, and organizer. A native of The Bronx, New York, Washington is a versatile and fearless multi-hyphenate, and has received high acclaim for her work in film, television, theater, digital media, advocacy, and beyond. Washington received widespread public recognition for her role as Olivia Pope on the hit ABC drama Scandal, breaking barriers as the first Black woman since 1974 to headline a network TV drama. Over the show’s seven seasons, Washington earned two Emmy nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, a SAG nomination, and two NAACP Image Awards for her role on the Peabody Award-winning series.
