We close out today's celebration of our SPARS with this Her Story Spotlight. Elizabeth “Betty” Splaine joined the U.S. Coast Guard Women’s Reserve, the SPARS, during World War II. She continued her service after the war for another twenty years, becoming the Coast Guard’s first female warrant officer in 1958. The HER story Spotlight Series takes a look at stories from both our MWM National Register, an interactive online database of military women, and our world-class collection. #HerMemorial #HonorEducateEmpowerRemember #WeAreMWM #USCGWomensReserve #SPARS #SemperParatus #USCG https://lnkd.in/ecrhR_5j

关于我们
The Military Women's Memorial, located at the Ceremonial Entrance to Arlington National Cemetery, is a living memorial. We are dedicated to honoring and remembering the service of our military women, telling their individual stories and collective history to the public, in order to help empower the future generations. Dedicated on Oct. 18, 1997, the Memorial houses an exhibit gallery chronicling the history of women’s service, a theater, Hall of Honor, conference room, gift shop and an outdoor terrace and Court of Valor. The heart of the Memorial is the Register, an interactive database that includes the name, picture, service history and awards of nearly 245,000 past and present servicewomen.

HONOR A WOMAN VETERAN SPONSOR A WREATH - https://bit.ly/3ABH1XN Earlier today, we shared the story of S1 Sophia Thadei, US Coast Guard Women's Reserve (SPARS,) who served during WWII. She was the first SPAR to lose her life and days later was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery. Help us honor S1 Thadei and our women veteran heroes who went before us and paved a path for future generations of women to serve. They served with honor, dignity, respect, selflessness, and unwavering dedication. On Wreaths Across America Day, December 14th, join Wreaths Across America and the Military Women's Memorial as we come together as a community to honor and remember our military women and their brothers-in-arms interred at Arlington National Cemetery and cemeteries across the nation and overseas. Join us in honoring them and their legacy. Our Memorial Team will be supporting volunteers laying wreaths at Arlington National Cemetery with hot beverages on the Memorial's plaza. Please stop by, take a break, and warm up. As we celebrate the 82nd anniversary of the legislation that permitted the creation of the US Coast Guard Women's Reserve (SPARS), we are sharing the story of S1 Sophia Thadei, USCG Women's Reserve, WWII. READ HER STORY - https://bit.ly/4g13n4d "On Jan. 1, 1944, tragedy struck the Coast Guard Women’s Reserve (SPARS) in Charleston, South Carolina. A young seaman serving as a telephone operator died in a Coast Guard ambulance enroute to the Navy hospital. She was laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery." "Seaman First Class Sophia Thadei served in the U.S. Coast Guard with distinction. She was among the first minority women as well as one of the first Native American women to wear the uniform. The first SPAR to cross the bar while serving, she embodied the Coast Guard Core Values of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty." - from https://bit.ly/4g13n4d Our gratitude to Donna V., who registered S1 Sophia Thadei's story of service at the Military Women's Memorial ensuring her story is preserved along with her sisters-in-arms and her legacy will live on at Her Memorial.
