We have 8 minutes, and all of the support and friendship you need. ? “I?have?a?dear friend going through?a?very hard time and I wanted to be sympathetic but I was really pissed off she didn’t call me. Like, I’m here, I love you, I support you, you’re always there for me, why wouldn’t you let me be there for you? Like how selfish are you? She said I did, I reached out a number of times. Like the text, “Want to come over?” I’m like how the hell do I know that’s a cry for help versus every other time … she read an article that says when somebody’s struggling, all they need is 8 minutes of help or support from a friend to get them back on track. So we came up with a code – Do you have 8 minutes? It means I need you. Anybody can step out of a meeting for 8 minutes … Never underestimate the power of reaching out when?you’re struggling.?Just 8 minutes can get you back?on?track.” -?Simon Sinek May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a prevalent and ongoing issue within Public Safety; Where recently there have been more documented suicides than on duty deaths per year. Take the time to look out for one another, it’s never too late to check in on a friend or a loved one, even if you saw them an hour ago, or haven’t spoken with them in a year. Can you imagine looking around a room during ?#WomensHistoryMonth and seeing 70+ women in the fire service learning, bonding and having fun? How lucky were we to start ?#InternationalWomensMonth #internationalwomensday?off with each other! On March 6, 2024 - 70+ Female Firefighters and women working in the fire service (fire investigators, EMTs, paramedics, lifeguards, fire admin) from across California gathered at the picturesque Annenberg Beach House. They spent the day learning from women who have lead the way in breaking down barriers in traditionally male dominated fields including: - Chief Kristin Crowley, the 19th Fire Chief for the Los Angeles Fire Department, and the first Female to achieve this rank in the history of the LAFD. - Lisa Jaster - United States Army Reserve lieutenant colonel and engineer officer was the first female reserve soldier to graduate from the Army’s Ranger School. Attendees enjoyed each others company and learning techniques to live a healthier life on and off duty. Thanks to our sponsors and partners - The LAFD Fire Foundation! On February 6, in conjunction with the Women's Fire League, The Los Angeles County Fire Department?spoke before the LA County Board of Supervisors on behalf of women in the fire service having access to proper fitting PPE. Ranking members of LACoFD presented?the issue before the BOS (Fire Chief Marrone, Deputy?Fire Chief Eleni Pappas, Marine Battalion Chief Danielle McMillion, and Battalion Chief Sara Rathbun); with?Shawna Lewis - Manager of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for LACoFD and?Captain Sheila Kelliher-Berkoh, LACoFD, making public comments in support of the issue. This is a safety issue, as identified HERE - https://lnkd.in/g3FcSjEu Traditionally?PPE is cut for the male body, causing?uniform pants, turnout jackets and pants, drysuits, and board shorts to add additional obstacles for female firefighters and lifeguards?to do the job safely. While women have found workarounds for this issue for decades, this is a simple fix - design and purchase uniforms and PPE that fit female firefighters and lifeguards properly to improve their safety and ensure their abilities to do their job efficiently. ? The Women's Fire Alliance was invited back for the 2nd annual LBFD Female Firefighter Workshop on December 3, 2023. This Q & A allowed for prospective female (and male) firefighters to ask a panel of female firefighters about their experience as women working in the fire service, what lessons they learned and could impart on the attendees, to give them guidance in moving forward with a career in the fire service. After the panel, the attendees were split into 3 groups to get hands on experience with ground ladders, chainsaws/rotary saws, and the civil service application process.
