To mark the start of the #16DaysOfActivism in Somalia, IOM’s Camp Coordination and Camp Management (CCCM) and Protection teams, along with internally displaced communities in Doolow, Banadir, and Baidoa got together to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Women, men, boys and girls participated in discussions and shared ideas on how to address the root causes of gender-based violence and stand in solidarity with women and girls.? A collective commitment was made by all the participants to foster a culture of respect, safety, and equality for all, with the goal of ensuring lasting change in their communities. We stand with IOM Somalia and these communities! Together, we are stronger in our fight to end violence and empower women and girls! #16Days #NoExcuse

? Young #girls are agents for #change and sustainable #peace in life during displacement.?? They can connect with older and younger generations, promote change, boost innovative ideas on community participation, and advocate for women and girls’ human rights.??? IOM-CCCM teams work every day with young girls living in camps and camp-like settings to promote their #leadership, empower them, and foster their participation in community life and decision-making structures. Through the activities of the Women's Participation Project, young girls are spearheading information and awareness campaigns on how to improve their lives during #displacement and their role in their communities. ?? Talatu (19 years old) in Jaccingo Camp, Yola in Nigeria shares “As young girls, we are not allowed to discuss our #menstrualhygiene or #reproductivehealth because, culturally, it is considered shameful. Whenever a young girl talked about these issues, we would laugh at her”. “Participating in camp activities has made me gain confidence to discuss menstrual hygiene and reproductive health issues and I have also realized my worth as a young girl in the camp”.??? Read from 3 young girls from #Nigeria and #Mozambique, sharing what participation means for them, and how they have seen the impact of WPP in their daily lives. IOM Nigeria IOM Mozambique

And the #women said: “We rise together, we care for our planet, we change the world”.??? ?? ?? This quote now rises in a banner in #SouthSudan, in the newly built Women’s Innovation Hub in IDP Camp #Bentiu. The Women’s Innovation Hub is the most recent women and girls’ community center set up in the Women's Participation Project framework. ?? Why is it important to have these kinds of venues in displacement sites? These are spaces where women and girls can gather, feel #comfortable and enjoy the freedom to express themselves without the fear of judgment or harm. Through the Women's Participation Project, IOM-#CCCM implementing teams have worked to build and support community centers for displaced women and girls in different camps and camp-like settings. The creation of these spaces has effectively impacted the provision of trainings, workshops, awareness sessions, and other #communityled activities. These community centers for women and girls enable access to information, resources and capacity development that reduce the risk of gender base violence and enhance their integration into #communitylife. They also facilitate access to the leadership and participation skills and services that promote women and girls' #empowerment. Today we celebrate the creation of South Sudan's Women’s Innovation Hub but also remember the creation of so many other women community and recreational centers, from #Bangladesh to #Yemen, that have fostered women and girls’ community coexistence, places for self-expression, and for support from one another. ?? ... Through the Women's Participation Project, our IOM-CCCM teams are supporting a gender responsive #participationrevolution. Based on gender analysis and participatory mechanisms, activities are designed to foster the #empowerment and #resilience of displaced women in our country roll-outs. We applaud the efforts of women in Mozambique on setting their own #businesses (with all the work in entails) and our IOM-CCCM team for supporting them. ?? ?? ??
?? "We're very happy to be part of this project! It made a world of difference for us and our community. With the sales and profits, we can now pay our bills and get school supplies for our kids. The support and engagement from our husbands, thanks to the awareness activities, has been so encouraging and motivating." Atija Armindo, originally from Quissanga District, is a member of the women's business group in Saul Displacement Site. Together with her group members, they sell dried fish at the site and in neighbouring communities. ?? Through the Women's Participation Project, IOM is supporting women in displacement sites and neighbouring communities to turn their business dreams into reality while creating sustainable livelihoods. In the last quarter of 2023, 1,475 women from 180 groups consisting of IDPs and local community members across six displacement sites in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces applied for the programme with their business ideas. From these, 220 women from 25 groups were chosen by their communities to bring their business ideas to life. With training, microgrants, mentorship, and community support, these women are achieving significant sales and profits. They're covering their expenses, providing for their families, and increasing women's participation in their communities. The project also sensitizes husbands and other male family members about the importance of women's involvement in economic activities and societal life. Additionally, the project is inclusive, ensuring people with disabilities are part of the business groups and have a voice. ?? With their efforts and enthusiasm, these women are making their dreams come true, while supporting their families and communities in a sustainable way. Supported by USAID Mozambique, Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office - UK in Mozambique and Embassy of Ireland in Mozambique.

It is always powerful when a woman #speaks. Even more during displacement. Enabling spaces and roles for women in camp leadership is essential because their voices represent the participation of women in #decisionmaking processes that directly impacts their communities and their well-being. It also allows them to voice their concerns and expectations on their life during #displacement. The Women's Participation Project enables the design and implementation of #communityled activities to raise awareness on women's rights and engage with women, men, girls and boys on the importance of the inclusion of women in decision-making. This participatory approach contributes to prevent and mitigate #GBVrisk exposure by allowing women and girls to identify challenges and by promoting their leadership to take collective actions to address them.? Listen to the voices of women in #CoxsBazar sharing about their participation in? camp #leadership and let us know what you think are the challenges and best practices to promote inclusive participation amidst growing displacement.
